We've been looking for a dog to adopt and add to our family. We went to Jake's Feed today hoping to bring home Teddy, a sweet little Maltese/ poodle mix that would have been a perfect fit. We went in knowing there would be a lot of interest in this dog and that we may not be able to bring him home. We showed up early and filled out an application along with two other families interested in Teddy. My 7yr old and 5yr old understood that we might not be able to take him home, but they were hopeful. After waiting about 30 minutes we were told that we would not be taking Teddy home because the director of the rescue does not prefer to adopt out to families with small children for fear of the dogs safety. Now mind you, my children are very well behaved and were sitting quietly and patiently while we waited. We have a 4 yr old maltese mix at home that my children are great with and that information was on our application. They played with Teddy and both my kids and the dog reacted well to each other. Being told that, I was disappointed but I said I understand and we'll be on our way. She then told me that we could look at other dogs. I asked her why would I look at another dog if the director doesn't like to adopt out to families with small children?? So you'd be fine with adopting out a dog with no other interested parties to a family with small children, but not the one we want, because someone else wanted them? My 7yr old was in tears because she thought it was her fault that we didn't get to take Teddy home. I'm thankful for these organizations that foster animals for adoption, but this situation was pretty upsetting. Maybe don't tell prospective families that your director doesn't prefer to adopt out to families with small children. It seemed like a cop out being that she was willing to allow us to look at other animals. Just be kind and say we decided to go with another family.

Adorable dogs, but I went in expecting to get a new companion, but about fainted when I heard they were $300 for a dog. I understand veterinary care, but I don't think most people even have $300 to put down to just adopt. No prices were on the website or Facebook page, so I didn't expect a price so high. I should've known. $270 for puppies as well. Might as well buy from a breeder.

The people are friendly and seem sincere about getting pets to good homes. They work hard to care for the animals. But, most are not housebroken. They need to be up front and post adoption prices, policies, and return fees on the social media sites. Otherwise, it appear like a bait and switch used car tactic. To be fair, I found out many rescues are charging fees to return animals in this area now. Which seems like it is about making profit rather than about doing what is best for the animal. This rescue does keep some of your money if it does not work out and only gives 3 days. So BE SURE when you adopt.
