I am sad to write this review. In the 9 years that we have lived here, we have visited this nursery relatively frequently. With the exception of upper management staff being quite pretentious, we have had a fairly good experience. We have made small purchases here and there but never really took the plunge to make large purchases until this year's tree sale. We were actually warned by a local landscaper that he doesn't purchase trees at Backbone Nursery due to them moving trees into larger pots before they should (in turn, charging more, as they charge by the pot's size and implied maturity of the plant). However, we took it as maybe he had a personal disliking or just a bad experience and was venting. We have never seen any reviews or mention of this, so we decided to take the risk. We spent over $2k on trees during their sale; purchased 17 trees. We felt that we got a good amount for our money and were happy with our purchase, as well as the selections. Once we began transplanting the trees, we realized that approximately half of our trees were upsized---likely JUST for the sake of the sale. The trees we purchased ranged from 7 gallon, 15 gallon, & 30 gallon. ALL of the trees in 30 gallon pots were moved from a 7 gallon straight into the 30. It was so apparent; we cut the pot to pull the tree out and all of the backfill soil fell off of the previously sized pot, exposing a perfectly formed mold of a 7 gallon pot. A couple were slightly root bound and were probably ready for the 15 gallon pots but certainly not 30! It's easy to assume there haven't been others to comment because many people (especially in our area) likely hire landscapers to plant their trees. Whether the landscapers tell their customers or not, is likely why the nursery is able to continue with these unethical practices. We are frustrated that not only were we significantly up-charged but we rented heavy equipment to accommodate the quantity and size of holes that we would have needed for several 30 gallon trees. We learned very quickly how excessive it was to have spent extra money to make planting easier, as 7 gallon holes are quite easy to dig on our property. We feel robbed and grossly misled by this facility. The lower level staff are always so friendly, helpful, and extremely hard working. The director of sales (I cannot remember his name), also extremely helpful and knowledgeable. Their selection is good. These are the reasons that we have generously rated them with 2 stars. However, we will drive a bit further for our future nursery needs.

I had the pleasure to spend a couple of hours at Backbone Valley yesterday for their annual fall tree sale. I was given a guide named Adam to help find everything and he did a spectacular job. They run a first rate operation. I've never seen anything like it in the nursery business. I love this nursery! Today, I met a very nice lady named Sam and she was so helpful! She walked me around to the things I was searching for and let ask questions about other plants I had at home with issues. She was patient, very approachable and knowledgeable. Thank you Sam, staff like you just keep me coming back and staying out of the box stores! See you again soon!

I have lived in this area for four years and only just now discovering them! I have been driving down into Austin and Dripping Springs to find plants and trees when all along this place has been in my backyard.
Very easy to find and plenty of parking. Even open on Sunday for those who are inundated during the week and can't get out except for a weekend. When I first stepped out of my car and began to walk around, it was dizzying. I felt like a kid in a candy store. So many tree varieties to choose from and I couldn't even begin to guess how many acres this place is.
There are staff all over going about tending to the plants/trees but if you need help, they will go out of their way to help you. I was assisted by Adam who was extremely friendly and helpful. I simply had a question about a tree but Adam took me around in a cart giving me a tour since it was my first time here. In the end, I did end up buying a tree which they were happy to hold onto until I am ready to bring to my house. All of the staff are very friendly and Adam was especially helpful.
They had trees I have been searching for online and some I thought I would have to buy from tree farms and have shipped here. And not only trees, but they have so much for bushes and shrubs and regular plants to decorate your landscaping if that is what you are looking for.
Something else I really appreciated was there was no pressure. At other places, I have experienced high pressure sales, but here, they are very knowledgeable and just want to help. If you are looking to add something to your backyard or landscaping, you won't find a better nursery.

Nursery has loads of plants. I found them to be much more expensive than other nurseries
