Five stars for the Robert Irwin piece, which is lovely. But I'm really writing this review to let you know that while the website says tours are "strongly recommended", what they don't tell you is that they are required, period. Even if the building with the cubes is open, and there are people in it, and it's during visiting hours, they still won't let you see the art unless you're on a tour, even if there are like seven people on the premises there who could theoretically help you. This is a weird and frustrating policy that I hope they change — but until they do, only come if you have a tour booked!

Massive buildings for massive artworks. Unfortunately the whole place doesn't make you entirely feel welcomed and the buildings too closely resemble the barracks architecture of concentration camps.

We weren’t lucky enough to see the entire exhibition open. We only visited the small shop and the outdoor exhibition. I bought a book (there were some interesting titles). It was an intriguing place, and if I ever have the chance to go back, I’d love to see the rest. Personally, I would recommend stopping by if you have the time.

Chinati Foundation superlative insight into Donald Judd's work. Robert Irwin intervention in the ex army hospital is beautiful and in itself is worth the long trip to Marfa TX. Not so the posthumous work of Dan Flavin, which is repetitive of other installations. Far away

We did the five hour long tour a few days ago had an amazing time! I will never see a box the same way. The 100 untitled works in milled aluminum were my favorite! If you’re going in the summer be prepared for the heat. The buildings holding the artwork are in a former military base… No AC.
We did the self tour of the Concrete Works and went back the next day for the full collection tour. Highly recommend!

Chinati provides tours of various site specific works and galleries within the town limits of Marfa. The untitled works in concrete are available for viewing any time they are open.

*This review is just for the Judd artillery shed exhibit*
I visited for a special sunset viewing & will be back to see the rest next trip!
Wheelchair Accessibility: there's a pretty large step to get into the artillery shed. I was with my bf who's used to helping, but even if I was alone the many staff members were so nice & super helpful & I know they would've figured out how to accommodate me.
Also very important!! Plan to visit when it's cooler outside. Not in June. It was sunset & raining out & it was still soooo hot in there. I can't imagine going when it's sunny in the middle of the day when they said it gets about 115° in there. The polished aluminum needs to be kept clean so they don't open up the building for air flow much.
The aluminum pieces didn't really speak to my artistic taste, but are very impressive regardless. I'm very excited to go learn more about the history of Fort Russell!

We walked into what looked like a gift shop and weren't acknowledged, so that felt great. We didn't know what was going on and were immediately uncomfortable, so we started walking into the courtyard and only then did a lady come out of the woodwork to flag us down with an "excuse me" in a tone of, "you need to pay to be here you complete idiots." This whole initial interaction was needlessly awkward. So $30 dollars later, we get a confusing map of the grounds and are told that there are 2 exhibits open at that time, awesome! BTW, this place is, like, 350 acres. We wander around what seems like an abandoned campus with some overpass construction in the distance and at this point we are so amused by the absurdity of the experience, we are having an absolute blast. We go into one of the TWO galleries open and there are like, 5 employees in this small room loudly debating about where to put a chair for the next exhibit, acting like we are invisible. One of them was taking notes about a chair. Maybe it was all performance art? We kept the sticker to remind us of the place and laugh every time we see it. 5-stars for the weirdest thing we did in Marfa.

I must say that was a lot of...well...nothing much to experience. The larger concrete boxes look like road box culverts. Some of the milled aluminum boxes were interesting but most were just repetitive and just orientated in a different direction. The "floating" tile floor is beautiful though. The crunched together auto bodies are colorful but that's about it. On this old military facility their are numerous buildings that are not be used and sit vacant and decapitated. More varieties of art would really help this place. There's better galleries in Marfa.
