CarMax San Antonio? More like CarMax San-NO-tonio. Overpriced vehicles and a sales process that felt like pulling teeth. Don't waste your time.

I bought from Carmax San Antonio (Fountainhead Dr.) a RAM 1500. Two months passed and the car broke. I wasn't able to start it. The car was towed to the Carmax facility at their expense. They repaired it but it took 11 days. In the end I decided to sell the car back to them and they gave me a full refund.

I reside in Houston, but found a car that I wanted in Car Max San Antonio and made an inquiry. CarMax guys got back to me very fast, told me they did not have title to the car just yet, so they could not move it anywhere, even within the state. I was ready to come over and pick it up, but they tried to be really accommodating and suggested that they would put the car on reservation in my name, then once the title is received they would give me a call, I would need to call CarMax in Houston and arrange the transportation. I agreed.
So, I was waiting for quite some time, checking every other day and it showed as reserved in my name on the website, no worries there. But one day the status changed to "unavailable" and the car showed as being in transit to North Houston. I was sort of surprised as I had communicated earlier that I lived in West Houston and we discussed the CarMax office closest to me and I was sent the number. So I called and found out that title was obtained, reservation was released, someone else bought the car and arranged the transfer. Of course nobody called me. I was explained that once the title is released all reservations get cancelled automatically by CarMax online team that nobody has access to.
I really don't understand why would one undertake to do something that is not doable, though I certainly appreciate the initial desire to help. But be that as it may - if what I was told is true, then there is a huge coordination gap within the organization that makes purchases in other states next to impossible. Due to which gap I ended up without the car that I was waiting for over two weeks, but with a hard inquiry on my credit history instead.
Will be looking for cars elsewhere in future.

They had the car I was interested in. Good test drive and excellent purchase experience. I deleted a star because I found a defect with the car that will have to be repaired by a dealership that should have been detected. The rear hatch release button assembly was loose and ended up falling out of the hatch assembly. Nuisance

Disrespectful service team. David offered me a cup of coffee in the waiting area, and waited 11 hours for a diagnosis appointment. Grace screams at me, on the phone, for every appointment I made last year. Lori has an apprehension to give, full-coverage drivers, a loner vehicle for the inconveniences. On three separate appointments, the mechanic broke my center vent, hood bar support, and the hood release latch. With that being said, my warranty hardly lasted a year. This is highly unprofessional and downright repugnant!

My wife and I have purchased cars from CarMax before and enjoyed the hassle free experience, so when we were looking to trade in our sedan for a more family friendly minivan, the first place we thought of going was CarMax.
We went in Oct 2024 to purchase a used Honda Odyssey. We knew that we were looking for something on the cheaper end and thus would have to deal with some of the downsides to buying a used vehicle but we ended up finding one we liked and the sales person we worked with was friendly and helpful.
After bringing the car home we noticed a few small things that were wrong but should have been covered under the 90 day warranty. The most significant of the issues that we noticed was that the automatic door would sometimes jam. Wanting to take advantage of the CarMax Warranty, we scheduled an appointment and brought the car in to be serviced and this is where things took a turn for the worse.
First Appointment - we brought the car in to get multiple minor things addressed and have the door inspected. The repairs took a week plus and when we got the car back, the door would not close (had to physically push from the outside the door in to latch properly). We did not leave the lot and scheduled a second appointment.
Second Appointment - When the parts came in, we brought the car in again. We were told the repair should take an afternoon. It took a week. We noticed the windshield whipper fluid wasn't spraying so we thought that is what extended the repairs. It wasn't. When we got the car back we noticed the windshield fluid still didn't spray and soon after leaving the lot, the door wouldn't latch close again.
Unfortunately at this point we had to use the car to leave for a trip so I had the windshield sprayer repaired (both nozzles needed replacement and it took 15 minutes to do) and since we don't need to use the door that doesn't close we refrained from using it.
During our trip, when my sister hopped in the car, she noticed that the seat closest to the broken door had a "broken" seatbelt. She moved to a different seat and once we parked I inspected the seatbelt to find that the anchor of the seatbelt wasn't screwed into the car. The bolt and everything were still attached. It was a lazy job where the mechanic likely needed to remove the seatbelt to work on the door and didn't put it back!
Luckily we only have one kid at the moment and she is still in a car seat where my wife or I need to set it up. So if we were to have put her in that seat we likely would have noticed. However if we had a kid who was old enough to buckle themselves in, it is highly likely that they may not have said a thing and we could have experienced a tragedy if we got in a wreck.
The service has been unacceptable. We went from having minor repairs/annoyances to having real, potentially dangerous problems with the car simply because we brought the car in to get repaired.
I tried to keep this short and left out a lot of minor complaints/details. This experience has caused us to question going to CarMax in general. At the very least, we will not be returning to this location.

Service level was below expectations. Staff was not very driven to help customers shopping for cars.

This has been the worst experience ever. I purchased a Jeep Renegade latitude for my father. In-law 4 months later, the car broke down. As it turns out, the clutch assembly for this vehicle is not available. Anywhere at all in the country, so now I have a $12000 debt. Over a car that doesn't work and cannot be repaired, and they will not return the car. They will only give me an appraisal offer for about three thousand dollars under kbb which would only be about $3000. They sold me an irreparable car and they knew it, it was highly unethical. I have asked several times to speak with the dealership manager and only been passed on to sales managers. Do not goat here for any vehicle. You never know if it's gonna break down and you're screwed.

Vince from the SA CarMax helped a lot! However, Grace from the service department was rude!

Brought Mother's car in after she passed away. As executor of her estate, was able to sell. Title was signed in all the wrong places but CarMax was able to help fix it. Showed up with no appt and was in and out in less than 2 hours. Online estimate was 12k, and in person was only 11k. So very fair pricing and estimation!

Recently, I took my mom to figure out what kind of vehicle she would like, we picked Carmax due to the vast selection of vehicles. We arrive and let the guy at the front desk know she wants to test drive a few vehicles to narrow down her selection, no issues with that, we go outside to see what they got with the ability to open the doors and sit in them and a sales person will be with us soon. She narrowed down a few she was interested in and wanted to test drive. We sit down with our salesperson to talk about them and her budget. Ended up talking about their neice- complete with pictures and video - more than what would be considered appropriate. We mention test driving these vehicles, my mom is then gently pressured to fill out pre qualification forms-still haven't test driven anything- it's not necessary but encouraged (I was against this since she hasn't test driven anything). They went outside and I waited inside. When my mom returns, she states she didn't test drive any vehicle. They were turned on, and she sat in them again, but that's it. Then she was pressured to make a decision on which one to buy. My mom said she needed time and left. After we left, she looked up test driving a vehicle at carmax, and apparently, you have to make an appointment. My husband was on their website a few days prior to our visit, and that information was not readily available. At no time during our almost 3 hours there, did anyone mention that. The moment we said we wanted to test drive vehicles, someone should have mentioned this policy. It was a waste of time!! No one should ever buy a vehicle they have not personally driven!!
