The Shaw’s in Montpelier is a vital part of the community — and like most grocery stores these days, it faces its share of challenges. From supply shortages to staffing gaps, it’s easy to understand that keeping everything running smoothly isn’t simple. Still, this location deserves credit where it’s due, especially for its commitment to hiring and supporting members of the special needs community. That kind of inclusion truly matters and should be recognized.
That said, there are some serious issues that deserve attention. During a recent visit, I witnessed management and a couple of other employees standing in front of the registers clearly having a good time “smoking and joking,” while a single cashier — a person with clear disabilities — was struggling alone at the only open register. This employee was doing their absolute best but clearly needed help. Instead of support, they were left to manage a stressful situation on their own.
Meanwhile, I couldn’t help but notice the ongoing challenges this store faces: shopping baskets routinely go missing (often taken by unhoused individuals), and there have been reports of other difficult incidents like overdoses in the restrooms. These are real community issues — and while Shaw’s can’t fix all of them alone, better management presence and accountability could make a big difference in how staff and customers experience the store.
In my experience that day, I stepped in to guide the struggling cashier through a problem that clearly should have had supervisory attention. The lack of response from management was disappointing and, frankly, unprofessional. It’s one thing to face the challenges every grocery store deals with — but it’s another to let leadership standards slip right in front of customers.
Montpelier’s Shaw’s has potential, and it has good people working hard inside. But it needs stronger management engagement and accountability to match its community values. With a little more leadership and care, this store could be a lot better for everyone who walks through its doors.

Good older store with limited parking and selection compared to the larger, newer stores.

Went last week spent $50 on food for work. Bought "100% beef" burgers. The meat is not beef. It doesnt look smell or taste like beef. I don't even want to know what it is. Frozen chicken wings were so soft, mushy and tasted of only fat. I tried having an open mind and tried multiple wings all were the same. I've had this brand of chicken from Walmart before with no problems. I will not return to this establishment.

This Shaws in VT was cute and had everything (other than a working restrooms) that my party needed. It was a neat packed smallish version of the larger Shaws in other major NE cities.

They like to pretend the restroom is out of order. Selection is small. Employees range from dull and tolerable to very rude and useless.

It's a smaller grocery store so expect less choices but can get most everything you need.

I am visiting the area and stopped at this store. While shopping, my son needed to use the bathroom and he is disabled so it was urgent. The bathroom was locked and when I asked for the code I was told it was out of order and the only available bathrooms were at the gas stations across the bridge which my son is unable to walk to.

I love that I can join fresh pass for $99 a year and get free home delivery. The organic produce, isn't typically very fresh, so check it carefully.
