Adopted Akela (formally Kesha) a few weeks back and we are loving getting to know each other! Everyday Akela’s personality comes out a little bit more and he ended up being quite a goofy dog. Akela loves meeting friends on our walks or lounging around all afternoon. He is the perfect little addition into my life style. The AWLA helped recommend our new vet and even covered the initial exam fee. We look forward to supporting them in the future!

Nice place. We adopted two kittens 09/2023. The people were friendly and we are very happy with our new friends. They’re growing up so fast!

We adopted Willow (formerly known as Zelda) almost 2 months ago. She’s been such a wonderful addition to our family of now 3. We knew instantly when meeting her that she was the one. AWLA staff were fantastic in getting us ready to take on this new responsibility of being Willow’s caretakers. Our lives have forever changed for the better!

We adopted our cat Toby (formerly Howard). Everyone at AWL is so friendly and happy and do so much to help animals. Would definitely recommend adopting from them - I would adopt more if we had room!

Our family has now adopted twice from AWLA, and they've always been amazing. Our first was a senior boy who had been brought up from TX by way of FL. We had 2-1/2 amazing years with him, and he absolutely had the most beautiful life with us. We were so grateful for having Kringle in our lives, no matter how short it was.In mid-September 2023, I returned to this great group of people for our newest family member. I wasn't totally sure Baby and I would be just right together (I had an idea, but you never know). Once again, the volunteers spoke to me about what I was ultimately looking for and they agreed that Baby was going to be just the right fit. It's been more than a month now and I'm so very thankful that I was able to find my Baby (the first pittie mix I've owned after a lifetime of field and sporting dogs). I know that when we are ready to adopt a dog for Baby, we will be looking to AWLA again.Their care, concern, and kindness is evident in the happiness and cleanliness of the animals and the facility. I should say that professionally I get to work with their Animal Control Officers as well, and they are the most amazing individuals. Always ready to help, they are critical to the services AWLA provides to Alexandria.

I just knew when I walked into AWLA that I was in the right place. Staff was very helpful in pointing me in the direction I wanted to find my furever fur baby! After choosing her the staff was more than helpful when it came to helping me out with the transition. I love the fact that staff members are involved with each animal and could personally tell me about each one and not just read her description.

I adopted my puppy Titan about two months ago and I still can't believe how perfectly everything came together. My coworker found Titan (originally Dandy) on AWLA's website and as soon as she sent me his picture, I knew he was my puppy! I called the shelter to see if he was still available and they let me know that a puppy like him would go fast so if I was interested, I should plan to be there when they opened for adoptions. From when I saw his photo online to leaving the shelter after visiting and deciding to adopt Titan, it was about 2 hours. I am so thankful for a great staff and simple process that brought Titan into my life.

Adoption process was easy and simple. As a new cat mom, the staff and volunteers answered all my questions. The volunteers were also really friendly and one volunteer played a big part in convincing me “Potomac” (whose name I changed to Summer) that she was a good cat for a first time cat owner. She was right. It’s been 2 weeks and I love her & it’s been such a joy having a cat! Also on day of pick up, they went over medical information throughly and I appreciated the first free vet appointment.

I just adopted a 4 month old kitten from AWLA. The process was extremely smooth and the staff was super helpful. They actively update the website so it's easy to see which animals are available for adoption. We selected our kitten, Friskie, online and went to meet her the next day. I fell in love with her in our first meeting, she was really friendly and cuddly. We filled out the paperwork for her in the same visit and were told to pick her up a day after she gets spayed. The adoption fee includes neuter/spay, some vaccinations and microchip, which is great. The first wellness visit to the doctor is also complementary. We were given all the relevant information about her when we went to pick her up and also given some dry and wet food for her. The staff also reached out to us a week later just to check-in and share useful resources.Overall our experience was excellent and we would recommend this shelter to anyone interested in adopting an animal.

I adopted a bunny named Ginger from the AWLA several days ago! Arranging the "meet & greet" was a breeze, and the staff members were awesome! We met the bunny with other staff present, and I felt like I was with family! The adoption process/fee was easy, and I left with a great package of information on bunny history and veterinarian options! The rabbit was exactly as described in the interview, and he is AWESOME! We are thrilled with our new family member! Based on my personal experience with the AWLA, I would recommend them for any adoption! Jennifer Norton

Out of the many adoption centers around DC my partner and I applied to in order to find the perfect cat for our home needs, they were the most communicative and quick responding organization! It is currently the height of kitten season so the fact they were able to stay on top of all the applications/inquiries was really great. We met up with a foster to see if their kitten was the right fit and had the ability to play with her alone to see her personality and get more information. The entire experience was very pleasant and I would recommend anybody!
