Hello. In the past my dad had filed my taxes for me and last year I did them myself using Turbotax. But I wasn't really sure if I was doing it correctly, so this year I decided to use a H&R Block location in Arlington, VA (3100 Clarendon Blvd, Arlington, VA 22201). My wife and I went to that location on 3/5/21 at 7 PM. We had an appointment with one of the tax preparers, Ibtisam Shareif. Right before that time I got a call from the office saying that Ms. Shareif would not be able to make it. I said that my wife and I would still come down to the office to drop off the paperwork, and the person on the line agreed. When we got to the office we were greeted by the receptionist, who gave us an envelope and form to fill out. We filled out the form, stuck our tax documents into the envelope, and handed it over to her. We told her that the documents were to go to Ms. Shareif. More than a month went by and we had not received any communication from Ms. Shareif. So on 4/16/21 my wife went to the office and asked about our documents. She talked to a different tax preparer, Lucinda Brunson, who told her that she would look into the matter and give her a call back. I myself called the office on 4/19/21 and I also got to talk to Ms. Brunson. She said that she remembered that my wife had come in on Friday and that my wife was one of the persons on her list of people to call back. Another week went by and we did not receive any call back from Ms. Brunson. So on 4/23/21 my wife went back to the office and talked once again to Ms. Brunson. Ms. Brunson said that she did tell Ms.Shareif to call us back and said that Ms. Shareif worked on Saturdays (if we wanted to drop by to talk to her directly). Ms. Brunson ended the conversation by saying to my wife, "What else am I going to do?" This was not very good customer service. On 5/1/21 and as advised I went to the office to talk to Ms. Shareif. I was sitting in the lobby before 10 AM and when Ms. Shareif came in late (the receptionist mumbled that Ms. Shareif was always late and that was not fair to the customers who made appointments) I asked her what the status was of our tax documents. She handed me back the documents that I had submitted and said that she had tried to call and e-mail me (this was not true because during the past two months my wife and I had NEVER received any e-mails or calls from Ms. Shareif). She ended by saying that I can make an appointment with Ms. Brunson to do the taxes. Why didn't she say she would try to rectify the situation with us (instead of pawning us off to her associate, Ms. Brunson)? Once again, this was an instance of not very good customer service. During that time the tax deadline was two weeks away and our taxes were still not done. So my wife and I scrambled to find another tax preparer to work on them. Instead of having a stress-free tax season H&R Block gave us an even bigger headache! Thanks, H&R Block! And as I can see from the complaints logged in the Better Business Bureau website this problem is systemic within that company.

My experience with HR Block was such a negative one. I originally called the Pentagon branch, mistakenly thinking it was Pentagon City area not in the Pentagon. That mistake is fully on me. But I wasn't advised this until many weeks after the 1st call. I called initially in mid-February and was working with someone who now appears to no longer work for this team. The reason I had decided to work with HR block was because this woman seemed kind and helpful. When I initially decided to move forward she told me to set up a myblock account and upload all my paper work and we'd talk through emails and the portal. I did that about and about 3 business days later heard nothing. Called the office and left two voice mail messages over a period of a few days. Eventually got a call back and they told me this original woman no longer works here and they'd hand me to someone else and then we made an appt for me to work with this new person. Then a few days later the new woman calls me and tells me she doesn't know how I got to this office since I don't work for the Pentagon and that she wants to transfer me to someone else. Okay I guess that's fine? And then she tells me she can see my online account but cant access any of the documents, it's all under the original staff person's name. So I called customer service, the main line, and after talking over a terrible connection to a very rude agent he tells me that the staff person needs to contact IT. There's nothing more I can do to get her access to my account. So I send her an email with screen shots proving my account is verified and exists with documents in it. It's about here that I decided to move forward with a different organization altogether. This has all been going on for just about a month. I emailed my contact and said no longer interested. I deleted my files from my account just in case which was for the best because I've had 3 or so follow up calls asking if someone has called to help me. Disorganized doesn't and slightly rude doesn't even begin to cover this headache of what should have been a basic transaction.

Not worth it. Taxes are complicated. I pay their fee to navigate this with an expert. While they were able to file my taxes on my behalf, I have many questions planning taxes ahead and I don't receive clear answers. Their advisors work part-time and will respond when they are done with their day jobs. In some cases you need a faster response but you don't get it which results in delayed communication and meetings. This is not desirable. When the expert can't explain some tax issues clearly, I am left to my own devices and knowledge which renders H&R Block services pointless. Additionally, their virtual services during the pandemic was horrendous. They have their own virtual meeting service that is very basic instead of using a service similar to Zoom. Their app is intended to keep messages between the advisor and myself safe and secure but it is so bad that I had to contact my advisor via personal email. Based on this year's service, I am ending my business with H&R Block and will hire a professional CPA that can provide the service I want. Looks like they are less expensive.

Extremely rude and unprofessional on a customer call. Said we took too long describing our issue, as if we were wasting their time-- it was a simple tax question lasting under a minute. Staff will probably downplay this review, but this is a warning to other customers: do not let them patronize you.

I was pleased with H&R Block's assistance. I have always done my taxes on my own, but last year I had to pay a lot. I thought I would try a professional service this year to see if a professional could save me money. I have to pay a lot again this year, so its nice to know I didn't make a blunder last year. The question is now: is it worth $500 for me to pay H&R block to do what it takes me ~2-3 hours to do on my own?
