Our daughter had an incredible time making her first birthday build-a-bear thanks to Chelsea. She was so patient and wonderful with our child — she really created a special experience for the whole family every step of the way.

I had a bit of an ordeal with this build a bear location. I decided to see how they would solve the situation before posting a review. A few months ago I came into the Charlottesville build a bear because we had just found out my daughter had thyroid cancer. We were really distraught about the news and I thought the best way to cheer her up would be to get her a little bunny rabbit she could take to surgery with her. I was pretty choked up when we went in there so I didn’t have much to say but the woman who helped my daughter whose name was Melody was incredibly rude to us. I was taking pictures and videos of my daughter so she could keep that special moment as a memory. She basically went through the motions with a horrible attitude and then when my daughter was dressing the bunny I went to take a picture and Melody barked at me “I DO NOT WANT TO BE IN PICTURES OR VIDEOS THANK YOU!” I honestly wasn’t up for a fight that day so I said ok and went home. Well the idea that someone like that would treat us that way was so upsetting to me, I ended up calling the build a bear customer service line and they said they would make sure the district manager got in touch with me. Long story short it took months, several phone calls, and me talking to the staff in person before anyone tried to handle the situation. Finally the district manager called and apologized. She was very nice and ended up refunding us the money for the bunny and offered for us to come in and get a new bunny for free. I was very pleased with the way Kelly handled this. I will say however, that when we went back in Melody was still working there (which I don’t exactly understand why a company would keep a woman who is ok treating people the way she did,, but ok) well, Melody didn’t offer a single apology or anything in fact she avoided any contact with us aside from the occasional glare. I’m giving 3 stars for the way Kelly handled the situation but this situation was pretty messed up and honestly pretty sad considering the company is supposed to be one that brings love and joy into the lives of children. I was hoping that bringing this to the attention of the district manager would help Melody to realize that with the job she has, she should treat every child who walks in those doors as though they just found out they had cancer.. but given the way she treated us upon our return, I would say that if you go here you should request that your child have the experience of building their stuffed animal with a different employee.

I was in search of the pumpkin kitty, so I left the house with enough time to get there when the store opened. I ended up getting stuck in traffic, and it had sold out by the time I arrived. While talking to one of the employees, another employee decided to give me hers before even verifying if there would be a restock. They were very friendly and helpful and made sitting in an hour of traffic worth it. Thank you to the workers who were there at 11:30 AM on 9/9 :)

While visiting Charlottesville we stopped in to the Fashion Square, and found a build-a-bear! To our delight, Melodee (could be spelled wrong) was the most fun-promoting person I've ever had aid me in building a loveable stuffed companion! Even helping us get the clothes on our KK Slider and Eevee pals!! Huge recommend!

Drove 1 hour and 30 minutes to Charlottesville specifically to go into Build a Bear with my 3 children. Get to the mall, go in and almost every store is closed. BUILD A BEAR has a sign on the gate closing the store that says "sorry closed for today" so disappointing!!!

We came for my daughter's birthday and the staff were so friendly and helpful in not only getting her what she wants, but also making sure we were ok with her getting each additional item (due to cost) which was really helpful. The store was clean and well stocked so there was plenty to choose from and we didn't feel rushed at all

This is a great place to get a stiffed animal for a special occasion. However, I took off three stars because the employees upsell the kids, not the parents. This happened to us at least once from each and every employee. We picked out a dinosaur to stuff and the employee asked my 5 year old if he wanted a dinosaur sound. That's an extra $6, but she asked the person not paying. Then another employee asked if he wanted a bow tie for the dinosaur. Again, an extra charge that a 5 year old doesn't understand. We did tell him that we could get a shirt for the dinosaur, but multiple other employees shoved more and more merchandise in his face. And we kept politely saying no before our son could answer. But it's obvious that they were trained that way to get kids attached to all of these expensive accessories without their parents really knowing or realizing the cost. Then a lot of parents would rather pay than drag their kid out screaming. It's pretty dirty for the employees to do this.
