Love the YMCA as whole, however my experience as a black woman at this specific gym has been very uncomfortable. So many micro aggressions are thrown which is just racism for you that will try to disapprove that statement. The gym is the place where I decompress and with this gym having a larger variety of equipment it saddens me that I’ve had to deal with this sort of treatment in the 21st century. Hopefully those who feel annoyed with my presence learn to look within and work on themselves.

If you’re looking to help build your child’s confidence and coordination – then swimming lessons at the YMCA (Great Bridge/Hickory) is highly recommended! In just a couple of months we have seen growth and progress in our 5 year old swimmer, who is non-verbal and a twin. He has learned to reach, “blow bubbles”, turn on his back, built up strength to climb out of the pool (which is a very important for pool safety) just to name a few positive experiences. All the instructors are great, especially Ms. Lori! She is patient, fun, knowledgeable, and communicates with ease. We are lucky to have found such a great organization.

Really enjoy this location! The pool and splash pad are exceptional with very attentive but not overbearing lifeguards. My kids enjoy all the play areas where they are always staffed. Front desk greatest were very helpful and always friendly. Very pleased with joining this Y

I haven’t been coming to Great Bridge that long, but I’m so grateful for the thoughtfulness, camaraderie and support I’ve received from fellow members! I was getting ready to work out & realized that I had left some needed items. Not only did a lovely young lady stop what she was doing to help me, she even insisted that she share some of her own resources with me. I was completely blown away and full of gratitude. ☺️? This is a beautiful place for families, couples and individuals to come and be at home, away from home.

It's the Y. The gym equipment is great, the facility is clean, and people of all ages are working out. Lots of kids running around in the summer, so watch out for that. We've used swim lessons (great), had kids on TIDE's swim team (great), taken classes (great), and used the equipment (great). It's got a lot to offer and like the facility and its staff.

As a non member we had a wonderful experience at the Hickory Y during swim lessons for my grandchildren. The staff is friendly and the swim program is great. Many, many thanks to Angie Meseke, Director, who was awesome!!

The pool is closed more than it is open due to no lifeguards on duty. This is an utter rip off with what I pay out of my disability for my membership. Also Ms.Brenda at the front desk was rude beyond belief.

We have been going to swim lessons at the Suffolk and Elizabeth City YMCA for years, NO ISSUE. We started going to this one first month was fine but 2nd month, different instructor and my kids came over to me saying the instructor was creepy and making them feel uncomfortable. I questioned what was wrong, they said did you see us, he made us jump up on the side of the pool backwards (out of water) and stood behind us while he grabbed our legs. It hurt their belly and it was weird. The guy was older and he was weird. I confronted the swim director who could care less and said she has over 500 or 5000 can’t remember in swim lessons and my kids probably didn’t like him cause he was firm. I knew then I was wasting my time. I called and left a message for the customer executive director 2 weeks ago, still no follow up. Sounds like they know and covering it up. My kids will not be going back here. Be cautious taking your kids here for swim lessons and while I sat in the lobby every time there were daycare complaints in the infant room. Be cautious there too.

Save your money go elsewhere. I was disrespected by an instructor named Jeremy and I reported him. The aquatic director which is a female didn't do anything about it. I also paid for for son's swim lessons as well as the 93.00 monthly membership fee and it was the third week of them not having his name in the system with his assigned instructor or on the paper that is out on the desk in the pool area. They are really nasty people. Don't support this ymca, there are cheaper more better places out there for swimming like recreational centers. You have been warned.

This is our home Y and I'm writing this from the perspective of the occasional gym goer who has a child under 1! My wife and I love it! The childcare option is clutch. The staff is soooo friendly and they take such good care of our little one. There's enough gym equipment in the weight room and cardio sections to find what you need to get a good workout in. Equipment is updated and new and they take good care of it (clean and operational). The coffee bar is a nice added touch. When I'm able to sign up for classes, the instructors are enthusiastic and wonderful. Definitely try out on of the cycling classes if you have the chance!

Initial promotion of the volleyball sports program indicated a twice to three times a week practice schedule. That was canceled upon an unexpected interest in the program. Season play did not utilize regulation rules. Continued reiteration of a points system not being of importance was negated by the keeping of score during game play. Upon the season finale teams were ranked and placed into a tournament with neighboring YMCAs. The rules during the tournament varied from the season long rules that were utilized and varied from one game to the next. The line of play for a ball being out was moved which created interference with basketball equipment stationary upon the ceiling. One of the games the visiting team was a player down therefore our team was asked to voluntarily handicap itself by removing one player. The coach for the VA Beach Y apparently was a paid professional coach who coached city wide for the Y. The coaches the Hickory Y had were volunteers. The VA Beach Y illegally rotated players throughout games in order to allow their strongest players to be utilized for servers. When I addressed my concerns I was told that everyone deserved a chance to serve and that once again points or standing played no part . If this was the case then why was the other team allowed to strategically place players on the court to put them at an advantage. Obviously points mattered to them. After one game the sports director instructed the players of my daughters team to not show obvious emotion of elation upon winning as they needed to put theirselves into the shoes of the opposing team. All payers were in the same shoes upon entering on to the court. Overall there was no one representing the Hickory Y whom advocated for the success of the teams which they were suppose to be representing. This organization is unprofessional and promotes itself falsely as others have said as a representative of Christian values. My child’s team did not win the final game and upon conversation at home later my child expressed her disappointment in losing to cheaters. Her team did not lose to an opposing team but rather to a system which continually moved the goal post in order to produce an equitable outcome. I suggest steering clear if you have aspirations to pursue HS, College or professional level play.

Terrible customer service behind the front desk. They just want your $$$, they don't care about anything else. Otherwise decent facility.
