About Herbert H. Bateman Educational And Administrative Center
The Herbert H. Bateman Educational And Administrative Center is the official visitor center for the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. It is a recommended first stop for visitors to the area, providing an introduction to the wildlife refuge and its conservation efforts. The center features terrific dioramas and informative interpretive signs on the marsh and its inhabitants, as well as the area's history. It is a kid-friendly facility with picnic tables, a souvenir shop, and friendly staff. The center also offers stamps for the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and the Assateague Lighthouse. While the center is open from 10 am to 4 pm, Thursday to Sunday, the restrooms are not available beyond those hours. Visitors can get guidance on hiking trails, wildlife viewing, and beach access from the knowledgeable park guides. The center serves as a great source of knowledge and reflection, educating the community about the importance of conservation and preservation in the region.
Assateague Island is absolutely beautiful and the educational center provides lovely context for your experience. The adults and children in our group found something to interest them. The staff were friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable.

This educational center is really nice inside and has a lot of good information. Kind of hard to find and not really advertised anywhere on the island or online, but definitely a good place to bike to to start your hunt for pony viewpoints.
