We are relatively new to the Northern Neck and came into this store twice last year - both were great experiences. We purchased all the paint for our renovation and the paint staff took time to provide guidance and assistance. When searching for plumbing supplies a staff member walked me right over to where I could find the products needed.
Things have changed. We’re changing the color of our front door and I ordered a sample jar of one color online to pick up Thursday - hoping that I could get other color options while there. There were 3 staff behind the paint desk - all talking to each other and not looking up. When I asked for my prepaid paint jar the woman pointed to the floor for me to pick it up. I went to the color selections hoping they’d wrap up their conversation and one of them could help me - - but the one paint expert left and the other 2 disappeared. There were multiple employees in the store - but not one available to assist. When leaving I was told I had to sign for the paint and provide identification.
Today - I ordered and prepaid for 2 more paint samples and a patio umbrella via the Ace
App. Ace indicated all 3 would be ready for pick up in 15 minutes. Jennifer from Ace called to let me know that they won’t mix the paint until I get there because too many customers aren’t picking it up (although the online orders are prepaid?).
2 hours later I go directly to paint counter so I can purchase other items while paint is being mixed.
Jennifer is going to mix the paint after she helps another customer. I go to the check out counter and ask the young woman if she can get the umbrella I ordered and paid for online. She says she knows nothing about an umbrella and it’s not there unless I got a call from them. I explain that this is through the Ace app and find the email with the order number.
When I show her the email with the order number she states I should ‘give her a break - there are only 3 of them working at the store.’ There was no one in line or at her counter.
I wait for the paint to be mixed - there’s no one available to help with any other purchases. After the 2 8 oz prepaid paint samples are mixed Jennifer brings the forms for me to sign - I ask again about the umbrella. I’m them told there was a mix up with the umbrella- they showed 2 in stock and have none. They can’t refund it in the system - I’ll have to do that on line.
40 minutes later I have 2, pre paid 8 oz paint samples, a charge for an umbrella that I need to address and none of the other 5 items I needed to pick up because of what appeared to be staff disdain for customers.
Goodness.
Thank goodness there are other hardware stores in the area!!

It is a typical Ace Hardware. It has ever obscure fastener you can think of but finding said fastener is an adventure.

Always have what I need . Some things are a little pricey but others cheaper . The convenience is nice and the staff great.

Music was annoying (too loud).
It was very obvious that the principal was not there. While the staff was polite ( the one I questioned mentioned there were only 3 employees all day), I would have bought more if the help were motivated to assist and 'sell.' I guess this is a typical thing now in retail. It just makes on-line shopping more attractive.
