I spoke with Matt Faircloth. Nice guy. IMHO opinion very expensive. I don't believe the the service I received was justified the payment asked for. I am not an accountant, I expect my accountant to be an accountant. I submitted all my tax information early the first week of January. They had my PnL, you would think that they would look at it and see if I needed to issue any 1099s. We did not employ anyone in the previous tax year, but we do have a loan and I wasn't sure if we need to issue a 1099-INT. I asked the question, via email, got back a terse answer to a question I didn't ask. I emailed again to clarify and was told that 1099s were due the day the email was sent. That's great but it didn't answer my first question which was do I even need to issue a 1099 in the first place. Google came to the rescue and informed me via another accountants website that the answer was no. I complained and received a call shortly thereafter that I should go somewhere else for my tax return. My advise IMHO, is to not use this business in the first place.

I hired Berg Faircloth when I’d recently formed a DC LLC and they assured me that they were familiar with my specific trade and could help me navigate the requirements and make the best tax decisions. I was extremely disappointed. Draft returns arrived without any discussion or consultation, and had clearly been hastily slapped together. The firm was not able to answer my most basic questions about DC LLC tax and in one instance gave me a completely wrong answer on a fundamental point. When we got into the weeds, there was no indication that they knew anything about my trade or took any time to do the most basic research. Further, I understand that my tax preparer had health issues, but she disappeared for more than a month during a critical time when an extension was necessary and no one from the firm bothered to contact me. I was assessed tax penalties for the first time in my life under this company. Their bills were also extremely high and inflated. For example, I called and inquired about one tax issue, they told me they didn’t know anything about it, and then billed me for providing advice on the issue. Overall, they were about three times more expensive than my prior (and future) accountant, and significantly worse.

I have used Berg Faircloth for many years. I used to do my own taxes, but after starting a small business, and purchasing a rental property I realized I needed some help. They were very professional, and saved me a lot of money in taxes by utilizing their immense knowledge of the tax code to maximize my legitimate deductions. They offered sound tax advise for me to save on taxes going forward and instructed me on how to increase my withholdings so I wouldn't owe large sums in the future. They provide your taxes in a bound portfolio that is very impressive to say the least. I have a friend who uses them and purchased the audit protection and was audited, and he said it was a life saver by having them in his corner. After looking up the number to make my appointment this year, I saw they only had one review and it was a bad one. I felt the need to give credit where it's due.

We used Berg Faircloth for taxes for a number of years. They ran up hours doing unnecessary tasks like double checking our year end cutoff for expenses, but they assumed the a $210k IRA rollover was taxable income without taking 1 minute to email us and ask. They twice miscategorized our real estate partnership after being specifically given the correct information which forced us to file amended returns. They failed to identify that we were eligible for the R&D tax credit. We changed firms last year to Fitzwater Dean; they figured out the additional tax credit we were entitled to and charged us 1/3 as much as Berg Faircloth to do our tax returns. Honestly I'm amazed that Berg Faircloth is still in business if our experience is at all indicative of their competence or professionalism.

I've been a client of Tiffany Liston's (Part of Berg Faircloth) for a number of years for both personal and business tax preparation. Without a doubt, she is one of the most responsive and helpful tax professionals I've ever encountered. I have recommended her in the past to friends, and will continue to do so moving forward.
