November 2023 by Meta
Called to make an appointment for a simple cut and style the person picked up and told me no appointments are available. Then I asked when are appointments available, they said November 20 and I said ok let’s do it then they proceed to tell me “nope nothing available for November”They seemed very standoffish and unwilling to help or give me an alternate date. I would give this place 0 stars. Go to a real salon you will get treated better.

Loved my experience at the Paul Mitchel School. My stylist was both professional and personable. Love the dimension in my highlights and the extra conditioner really helped my hair. I will be coming back.

As an alumni of Paul Mitchell Tyson’s Corner, I would “NEVER” recommend anyone, who is interested in attending a cosmetology program, to attend this school. Since graduating, I have taken some time to reflect on my poor experience at Paul Mitchell: The School and offer a response that is clear and concise. To begin with, my name is Christopher Scott and I attended Paul Mitchell: The School, Tyson’s Corner in the fall of 2019 and I graduated in November of 2020. When I toured the school, I met Brian “Beama” Whalen and he was nothing short of amazing. The upper class students were very welcoming and it made me feel like I found a cosmetology home. For those students who are reading this, please do not be fooled by the glitz and glamour by this school in Tyson’s Corner, Virginia. Everything that glitters is not gold and I learned this firsthand. The former School Director, Yovania Rosa, was neither here nor there with the students. There were days when she would not acknowledge people’s presence in the hallways nor on the clinic classroom floor. As a leader of the school, it is important to establish relationships with students and she chose to do otherwise. The former Educational Director, Johari “JoJo” Jefferson, was very selective in who she communicated with and if you were not apart of her inner circle, then you were merely a stranger to her. She was not personable at all and she would spend majority of her time in her office. One time, I had a question and I asked if it was a good time to speak with her. She said, “Yes”. When I was talking to her, JoJo’s back was to me and she kept typing/ scrolling on the computer. At that point, I did not feel acknowledged and I left feeling like she lacked professionalism. She even mentioned to me, “I got my license; you have to get yours.” In all, JoJo left a bad taste in my mouth while attending this school. Two former learning leaders, Tyrice Otts and Robert “Rob” Booterbaugh were modern-day “Mean Girls”. Similar to JoJo, if you were not one of their favorites, then you were not selected for specific services, such as highlighting/ toning services and coloring services or you were not approached to apply and enter Phase II, which is PMTS’s Honor’s Program. It was clear that PMTS in Tyson’s Corner did not cater to Black people. For example, Caucasian students were always given highlighting/ toning services and coloring services whereas Black students, like myself, were given Black people who more than likely needed blowdrying and thermal services, deep conditioning treatments and haircutting services. When I noticed the trend, I approached Robert and I asked for more lightening/ toning services and coloring services. However, nothing came from the conversation. Then, there were no products available for Black hair on the floor. If the students were not stealing them, then management locked it up in the storage closets or at the front desk. Lastly, the school itself went downhill during the pandemic. Three of my learning leaders left mid-year, one of which was the Theory instructor. The remaining faculty members were not organized at all and I did question their skills as licensed cosmetologists many times. It was apparent that these learning leaders were collecting check their minimum-waged checks and were mediocre by default. Because of the lack of organization, I was left to my own devices and I had to empower myself to finish off strong because I did not feel no support from Antonia Richardson, Johari Jefferson, Judy Ma, Robert Booterbaugh, Tonnie Moore or Yovania Rosa. When I voiced my disdain about the school via email to Yovania, I was met with “you are free to find another cosmetology school to finish your remaining hours” as opposed to finding common grounds as to why your school is not preparing me for life outside of cosmetology school. In all, I will not completely bash this school because I did learn some things: You have to aggressively fight for your right to a quality education and Be unapologetically Black in spaces where you do not see yourself in.

My daughter is loosing interest in studying at PM since they keep postponing her tour, don’t return phone calls or emails for questions that she has. She’s supposed to start her carrier and still doesn’t know fees, schedules and so. They are not taking it serious

I truly enjoy every time I’ve come to Paul Mitchell In Tyson’s. Arisbel is the best colorist I’ve had in a long time. She’s very detailed and amazing in her craft. Thank you again for a beautiful color service ??

Just left the salon under Jordan’s care. It was a wonderful experience! Although I was unable to get highlights as hoped ( my color just would not lift;), I was given a beautiful- much needed, haircut with careful blow out. Jordan was no nonsense, professional, pleasant and communicative every step of the way! I’m appreciative of the courtesy everyone in the salon extended for the first call in making the appointment to check out and everything in between. Just remember it is a school, so expect to practice patience with the service and your student. And, bring cash to offer a nice tip even if it’s just for their time. They’re doing there best to learn!

I've been getting my hair cut and colored here for years and it is always a great experience. Be prepared for it to take longer than at a salon, as these are students and they do have to check in with staff throughout the service. But the price point reflects the extra time it takes; You're getting a great deal, so bring a book and don't complain!

Worst experience ever! The student who cut my hair had absolutely no idea what she was doing, should never have been allowed to touch human hair. Above all, the instructors do not supervise the students and what they’re doing to the hair whatsoever! Would NEVER recommend to anyone!

Erin was wonderful. It's always a great experience at Paul Mitchell. Been going to the Woodbridge location (permanently closed) for 11 years but now have to come to the Tysons Corner location.

I want to give my stylist the benefit of the doubt, but the instructor who signed off on his work must not have been looking at my hair. My beautiful copper color job (done at a different, more expensive salon) is now marred by bright cherry red roots. I felt far too awkward to ask my stylist to fix it and I didn't want to spend another 3 hours there. The low cost is not worth it.

Cheap cuts/color but after 3 visits I know you get what you pay for. More importantly you are NOT a customer or treated like one--- instructors behave as though they are doing us a favor by charging their students to practice cutting our hair. Ridiculous.Over 3 visits I was ignored and dismissed by instructors when pointing out an uneven cut, hair color applied so sloppily it went under the neckline of my smock, and when I was literally SKIPPED by my student stylist and waited almost an hour past my appointment time bc she was busy talking and walked back the wrong customer. I cannot imagine these things happening with zero response/Mitigation from managers but that's Paul Mitchell I guess.I watched instructors on their cell phones while me and other 'guinea pigs' waited for them to come check a form for the students. I say check a form bc no actual feedback was given and VERY importantly the students are not being taught anything about working with people and learning effective communication. It is a disservice to these paying students that they are not given actual mentorship but rather function as seat fillers for managers or instructors (they don't appear to do either) who rush around frantically. When you teach-- why would that not be a teaching moment? To actually look at what was done and suggest/improve/TEACH? That is not what happened here, 3 times. The instructor barely looked at my hair, ignored my complaint and actually waved me off when I asked if she could look at it again. I explained to the student exactly how many inches and she literally cut almost double and I had ZERO help from her instructor who wanted ME to feel crazy for noticing. As I left today I saw another girl leaving in tears. Not a good place.

Run, don’t walk away, this place thinks they are doing you a favor. Unprofessional instructors, incompetent front desk, and you pay more now. It used to be you get what you pay for, but now—pay more AND the school thinks they’re doing YOU a favor. Better options - there are actually other schools in the area, Groupon always has deals at various salons with experienced hair stylists, or even hair cuttery. I actually feel bad for the students—tuition is exorbitant and yet the instructors are miserable, unprofessional people. Many just up and quit. The Woodbridge Paul Mitchell shut down—this needs to as well.

Skky was amazing in color and attitude. Very confident and capable and her heart is definitely felt during the appointment.
