Some of the staff at this location needs to be retrained on how to approach and deal with the public because their customer service skills or lack there of are clearly lacking which is evident by the cluster of recent reviews including this one. I could have been rude like some of them but I took the high road and drove off because not a single one of them was worth it. If you live in that area I highly suggest a different location.

The women I talked to was down right rude on the phone would not not recommend dealing with this place at all. It’s one thing to say you’re full but another to be down right hateful.

We contacted Southside about a dog We saw on their website. Their response time was amazing. They answered questions and set up an appointment for us to visit. We drove 2.5 hours from Virginia Beach to pick up Olaf formerly Memphis. What an truly great dog. He is just like they described to us. Thank you Mollie for all your help! We are so lucky to have found Olaf and Southside SPCA. If you are looking for a well cared for pet, don't hesitate to go to Southside!

Wanted to adopt a dog I saw online from this shelter, submitted an application, called multiple times and left messages, and even emailed and no response. This shelter is over an hour away from me so I didnt want to make the trip unless I knew they were open and the dog was available. I checked facebook recently and it stated the dog was still available as of a few days ago. Seems like they just dont want to adopt out. I have adopted before, and had multiple animals over the years, I own my home, have an enclosed backyard, and would of been keeping him inside most of the time, no reason my application wasnt accepted if that was the reason for no response. I ended up adopting from Colonial Heights Animal Shelter with absolutely 0 issues and great communication!

I called and told them the breed (or mix) and personality traits I was looking for. They called me back the next day and we scheduled a visit with 2 possible fits. I will definitely adopt from Southside SPCA again.

Southside SPCA is an amazing donor-supported non profit and I have only great things to say about the dedicated employees and volunteers. I adopted a dog that needed a little extra attention from these guys three years ago and my experience then and still today has been a blessing. I have also been lucky enough to volunteer on occasion. I googled them today because I was looking for something and am shocked and disappointed at some of the negative comments on google and can only imagine these people have no idea what goes into running an independent rescue. Of course I also know by the followers you have and the thousands of successful adoptions, these few bad reviews represent less than 1/4% of true opinion. Several of these were long ago but previously being part of another rescue for over 10 years, I know the heart and soul that gets poured into every animal and every decision and unfortunately there are times when a phone call doesn't get answered or returned or maybe an app is missed....its not intentional, its being exhausted and short staffed and trying to make it through the day of hard decisions created mostly by irresponsible and negligent owners. I tell adoption counselors and volunteers at the stands .... I dont know how you do it because there is no way I could deal with these people on a regular basis. There are some real winners that show up or apply to adopt. Will the dog dig? Will the dog pee in my house if left alone for 10 hours? Can I crate the dog for 10 hours? Can I leave it outside in a pen? Will hair get on my clothes? Does it really have to have heartworm preventative? Will it bark? Can I return my puppy now that I have had it for 6 months? But Southside SPCA does and does it with grace and they adopt out so many animals and care for so many more animals. Thank you for being you and for all the effort you give to animals in need of all shapes and sizes and condition. I will always continue to support this organization through donations, social media and volunteering when I can.... You are warriors and will never let a few disgruntled humans stand in the way or your incredible work of love. Hugs!
