I rented a minivan from AVIS through Costco travel on 12/5/2023 for one day. We are non-smokers and never smoked in the car. They falsely charged me $450 for ‘smoke smell’ in the car.I googled online and saw many people had similar experiences from AVIS.

I get it, they're not responsible for things left in the car, but if you're going to save my tums you can have the integrity to give me my cash back from the center console. I was more than willing to leave some back as a thank you. I just wanted the $20 I got as a Christmas present back. One car cleaner man with what seemed to be a speech or other disability became rude but the girl I talked to offered to cash app me. She was super kind and I appreciated her offer. However, I won't be renting from Avis or Budget any longer

My experience with Avis Car Rental at the Newport News Airport was awful. The workers arrived late, were not friendly and never apologized for the wait. Definitely would not use this car rental place again, especially if I need to be somewhere on time. Very poor customer service.

Once again, I received a vehicle that was only partially clean. Food under the seats, trash in the armrest box. windows needed cleaned and no window washer fluid. You would think filling the fluids would be part of getting the car ready for the next person. Halfway through my trip I started having engine issues.It took seven calls to Avis before I could get someone to help me without passing me on. They were finally able to find an Avis dealer three hours away to trade in the car.The car I received was making a loud rattling noise when I picked it up and when I informed them I had a 25 hour drive, they said it would be fine. Due to it being dark when I picked it up, I didn't realize it hadn't been wiped down from the previous rental, they left their hair scrunchie hanging on the blinker, low on windshield wiper fluid again and food and trash under the seats. Avis really should stop advertising that their vehicles are Covid cleaned. Once on the highway, the noise got worse, the tires were inflated to 48, 40, 44 and 46. I felt like I was being bounced around. They should have been at 35 psi. I had to stop and fix that. During the drive, the tires started to sound and feel like something was wrong. I normally return the cars to Avis cleaner than how I receive them, but this time I was done. They got it back the way I got it. I turned it in a day early because I couldn't wait to get rid of it. I told the clerk everything that happened and that they needed to take it for a drive on the interstate so they could see what was wrong before sending it out again. All they said, was Thank you for renting with us.

Requested a "full size" car. Was supposed to get a Toyota Camry. At the last minute was given a Buick Encore, a "sub-compact" vehicle. The vehicle was so small I had to put my luggage in the back seat. Additionally, the car had 68,000 miles on it. Very disappointed with no offer for a partial refund.

Don't rent from the airport. There's no parking and if you do park it's a fee per day. I could not find a parking space open so I left my car in the private space because there were no spaces. I came back to $175 toll fee. And no one gave a damn especially the rental people. I think they're working together

The Avis Rental des was very close to our baggage pickup terminal. The registration process was fast and very efficient. The clerk gave us EXCELLENT directions to where the car was parked and a detailed description of the vehicle. We completed the process within 10 minutes of our arrival at the desk and were on our way to our vacation destination.

The experience started bumpy BUT the representatives were on top of things. They made sure I was satisfied and my needs were met. Thank you! You can’t get this type of service with technology but with empathy provided by great customer service representatives!

Don't rely on the online prepaid booking. The car that had been guaranteed to me online was not there when I arrived in person - putting all of my travel plans up in the air. Also, the attendant at the counter offered no apologies and made little effort in helping me to get a refund of my money.

Car smelled like marijuana, wipers were missing rubber so didn't work, and one tire was nearly bald. Spent $$ to replace wipers since it was a rainy week and buy Fabreeze in effort to remove smell since I was transporting clients. Seems like Avis doesn't take care of their vehicles.Update. Avis did refund $$ spent on wiper as I provided a receipt.

This was the second time I rented from Avis. Everything was smooth with the vehicle. I am mostly upset about the customer service. My daughter left her wallet in the car and I called 10 times to see if the car was still at the airport so someone could check. NOBODY ANSWERED THE PHONE!!! It rang over and over. Luckily, the only thing she lost were some gift cards but it’s the principle that counts. Avis at the Newport News Airport is trash! You can NEVER get help from anyone when you need it.

Everything went smoothly but when one is renting a vehicle for a week maybe make sure that the oil doesn’t need to be changed within a few days. I had to swap the vehicle out in GA the day before I was to return to VA. I had to find a local Avis - luckily only 6 miles where I was staying. I was swapped with an older vehicle and a larger vehicle. I had chosen the original vehicle based on gas consumption and size. Being put in a bigger SUV meant I had to pay much more for gas. The vehicle was also older and I struggled to figure out how to operate the navigation in the dark because of the time I noticed the oil warning on the original vehicle was later in the evening around 7pm. The employees were very helpful though. Hours of operation in Newport News VA was ideal compared to individual branches outside of the airport.
