The blood draw process itself is always quick and smooth, but this location has a serious problem with lack of communication between the front desk staff and the phlebotomists in the back. This isn't the first time I've sat in the waiting room for 45+ minutes only for a phlebotomist to come out and act surprised to see people waiting. This time there were three other people in the same boat as me - checking in on time, then ignored and left to wait. I'm surprised no one gave up and left. When will the Red Cross learn that it doesn't matter how many harassing phone calls and emails you send about the blood shortage, if your front line workers are too underpaid and undertrained to actually handle the volunteers who show up to donate.

First of all the staff here is amazing, well organized and professional. My problem or our problem is the fact that donors like myself have to bring our own blankets because the Red Cross only provides a limited amount per person. I have a major problem with that; I have been giving platelets and blood regularly since the 1990’s and this is the worst shortage of blankets ever. We are volunteers, we do this to save lives, if you cared for us maybe you would not lose as many donors as you are losing. Consider this…

Very friendly staff, and you get to help people. Everyone should donate blood if they can.

Scheduled my appointment for 3pmafter being called multiple times about the URGENT NEED for platelets, left my house in Hampton at 2 and hit horrible traffic on the way. Tried to find a direct number to let them know I may be late, but none is available. Arrived at 3:02 only to be turned away because they close at 3. I have to get a sitter for my son everytime I come here, and I think it's incredibly inconsiderate how quick they are to turn people away. Makes people not want to donate anymore..

Today, I had a class at the Norfolk, VA location. I left my home thirty minutes before class. The location here is a 15 drive. There was pouring rain and a horrible accident. I arrived at 859 am and was told to walk around the building. I did as told and rang the bell at 903. A worker came out and said sorry I mommy watch says 905 and 905 is the cut off we won't let you in. 3 other people were in the same position. One was a pregnant woman who sat down and began crying saying it was so hard getting here due to accident. I said but it watch says 903. Your emails don't inform us of this policy and I went to the front and was told to walk around. How can you do this to people. I had to find child care and gas is so expensive. She said too bad. Disgusting Red Cross. Do better. I'll never use you again. I have used this place ten years. I'll never donate money or blood or anything again.

The people there were extremely nice and made me feel comfortable. I did a walk in and I only had a small amount of time. But they had me in and out in under 40 minutes! The place was easy enough to find. I went in the front door and there was a sign on the wall that said they're in 201 so I went to the second floor and there they were.Free snacks and drinks and you get to save someone. I'd call that a good day!

My fiance and I were called because we are blood donors, and were called to give platelet donations because there is a critical need. We were scheduled for a 3pm donation but when we got there at 3, were told they were closed. Told them our appointment was at 3 and she told us to wait a moment. 5 minutes later she came out and said the doors were closed and we couldn't donate. I echo the previous comments about how they schedule. If there is such a desperate need and we are both willing donors, why turn us away? Complete waste of time and makes me not want to donate at all. They might get more people donating if they did more about the scheduling issues.
