I’ve visited this store several times, drawn in by its unique selection of nutritious and organic items. The layout is inviting, and the product variety is impressive — I genuinely enjoy discovering new health-conscious options and don’t mind paying a little extra for quality.
However, my experience in the bulk section has consistently been unpleasant. Each time I’ve browsed the grains and seeds, I’ve encountered an employee who claims the area as “his department” in a way that feels territorial and aggressive. Rather than offering assistance, he watches me with an intensity that’s deeply uncomfortable — as if I’m doing something wrong simply by shopping.
On one occasion, I left the store entirely because of how unsettling his behavior was. I called the manager afterward, hoping for some acknowledgment or resolution, but was met with indifference. Today, I returned and was relieved to see he wasn’t there — until he appeared again, staring me down and approaching me in a way that felt confrontational. It was enough to make me want to abandon my cart and walk out.
When I spoke to the manager in person, I expected empathy. Instead, I was given a lengthy explanation about theft in the store and how the bulk section is frequently targeted. While I understand the challenges retail stores face, this doesn’t justify treating customers with suspicion or hostility. I’m there to shop, not to be interrogated or made to feel unwelcome.
Her response — “I’ll ask him to tone it back a little” — was disappointing. It suggested that his behavior is acceptable and that I should simply tolerate it. That’s not the kind of customer service I expect, and it’s certainly not the kind that makes me want to return.
At this point, I’m unlikely to shop here again. The store may have great products, but the atmosphere created by certain staff members — and the lack of accountability from management — has made it an unpleasant place to be.

Went to get some good meat. Unfortunately pricey so visits will be few. Was good though and people were nice.

Pretty large independent grocery shop with tons of vegan items.
Several specialty vegan and VGF items as well. We found a VGF sausage we have never seen elsewhere.
Found VGF mushroom meat we haven't found anywhere else too.
Definitely worth a stop for a snack or to stop or groceries.

There's not enough space here for me to describe how my wife was treated today. 9/12/24. She purchased pork chops the day before at 6:00 pm. Drove straight home to make dinner. The meat was prepackaged/ (shrink wrapped). Long story short, it was bad. She wrapped it in aluminum foil and put it in a freezer bag because it stunk so badly. The following day, we drove back to Earthfare in Roanoke va. to take it back and get a refund. When my wife entered the store, she took it to the meat department to let them know. That's when the nasty attitudes started, I say attitudes because not only was the man at the meat department defensive and rude, but the person up front where he told my wife to go was even worse. She basically questioned why she would have taken it to the meat department to begin with. Then, the lady (front end team leader) walked it back to the meat department to verify? She said that other customers had been in there the week prior and were trying to get a refund on meat that they had purchased a few days before. My wife asked her if she was accusing her of doing that... She brought the meat back! There is obviously a problem with the meat at Earthfare in Roanoke. We are going to reach out to the store manager and to their corporate headquarters. Selling bad meat is one thing. Treating customers like they are the problem is quite another. We will never buy anything from Earthfare in Roanoke va again.

I am very dissatisfied with this store as they have sold me, not once, but twice, spoiled meat and seafood. A few months ago I was sold shrimp that smelled like chlorine and yesterday I was sold skirt steak that was putrid, made me gag when I tried it at my family table. My dinner has been ruined twice, I have had to go to the store and speak to customer service twice (and the actual store manager is always too busy to talk), I could had been sick twice. Yes, thank you for the refund but really this is not Ok at any level, no urgency to pull this off the shelves or attempt to rectify the situation. I relied on this store for all my family’s meat and seafood needs. Again, very disappointed. I will not be buying any more meat or seafood from here until there are clear changes and inspection.

We don't live nearby, but any time we go into Roanoke we'll stop and get those things we like that only they carry (organics and BAKERY), plus we're always finding new items to try. Highly recommended!

not originally from this area and was worried that there wouldn't be a store like this, was so happy to find Earth Fare and it was exactly what I was hoping for – prices are fair for the kind of food they sell and the selection is great, the store is big... they also have a filtered-water refill system where you can bring jugs and fill them with water filtered in multiple different ways for very cheap!

Thus location has been providing dismal customer service for quite some time. There is a young man who makes pizzas who does an extraordinary job every time I go. And he's it.The cashiers regularly talk to each other and treat you like an afterthought. The pizza bar, juice are, and deli staff are routinely RUDE and difficult to get support from... I stopped by today because the ingredients are healthy and asked if they could warm up the cold grab and go pizza slices in the oven. Two young ladies had to check in with each other and the one in greater leadership said she didn't know how to work a pizza oven. REALLY? You open the door, sister, and put a cold slice in the oven. Ever been to Benny's downtown Roanoke? Or at home? You simply put the slice INTO the oven. Both young ladies offered me the microwave.Does anyone in retail grocery in Roanoke KNOW ANYTHING about organic food and health conscious marketplace and people?????Or even pizza? Pizza isn't a microwave food if you are having really good pizza. If you live on a deserted island with only a pizza and a microwave... ok... but... SERIOUSLY!!!Earthfare, PLEASE TRAIN YOUR STAFF AND HIRE people with some passion for customer service and learning.Josh is a great manager.Sooo... Is this Earthfare or this location? And I am available for hire as a coach and consultant to teach both a passion for organic foods, customer care and service, and build your team into a rockin' group and show 'em how it's done. I love interactions with people who feel confident about their job and in themselves. This is just the pits.It cheats Roanoke and the staff to be allowed to continue to treat themselves and their customers this way.So much awesome waiting for you all. Thanks for reading.

Trying to buy groceries but the employees are closing it down and covering everything an hour before the hours on the door says they closed. Update your hours if you’re closing earlier. Won’t be coming back again.

Great store for your organic/natural food items or beauty products!
