Read Mountain Preserve offers a beautiful and challenging escape with rewarding views. The trails are well maintained with clear signs, varying from moderate to advanced. Terrain includes tree roots, various sizes of rocks, narrow paths, rock, sand, leaves, and pine needles. There is a small stream to see. The hike to the top is well worth the walk, though the final lookout requires seeking a small unmarked path. The parking lot is small and was noted to have litter from overflowing trash cans, but the place is otherwise clean. It is dog friendly and provides shade, adventure, and photo opportunities. The experience presents challenges and rewards, suitable for enjoying a rest off the beaten path.
Great hike, not too steep, not too crowded. Views at the top are great of Hollins, Roanoke Airport, and Salem. Carvins Cove peeks through the hills on the right.
