We hired Commonwealth to build a garage, rebuild a laundry room, refashion a fireplace to built-ins and perform various other alterations in our home. We would recommend Commonwealth without hesitation to anyone who wants meticulous, honest, top-quality work. The custom cabinets that they built are of excellent quality, they genuinely listened to any concerns or questions that we had, and dealt honestly with unexpected issues that came up. Someone was always responsive to us, and present daily through the 5 months of work. We also greatly appreciated the care they took with the rest of our home relating to the dust and other effects of construction. Kelvin was excellent to deal with on the contract itself. Daniel did an exceptional job of keeping us in the loop, doing fantastic work, making thoughtful and creative suggestions, and being a reliable presence. He really went above and beyond. Dave did a great job of researching and offering options when the scope of the project had to change due to unexpected conditions, and his carpentry skills are fantastic. Angel, Jay and Saylor (who also did excellent carpentry work) were hard workers and pleasures to be around. And of course Susan and Vicki were lovely to deal with on the design front. In short, we couldn’t be happier with the end product and feel great about the overall process. Sometimes getting contractors to finish work is like pulling teeth - not with Commonwealth. They were truly concerned about delivering a product that made us happy. And we are. We are so glad we hired them - highly recommend!

My wife and I recently did a kitchen and bath renovation and we couldn't be happier with Commonwealth. They did exactly what they promised, on time and on budget. One of our big concerns was not having someone onsite daily but the Commonwealth team arrived every day to keep our project timeline intact. We were so impressed with Commonwealth we had their company build our kitchen cabinets for our renovation. They look amazing!
We would 100% recommend Commonwealth (and already have)!

We always planned to move to get more space, but then it became far more cost effective to remodel. Friends of our used Commonwealth 10 years ago and are still happy with the kitchen they designed and built which was a good endorsement to us. We wanted to make the most of the space we have. We met with Kelvin with the plan to remodel our kitchen and screened in porch. Susan drew up plans and gave us some options we hadn't thought about that have worked really well. They weren't the cheapest estimate we got, but they weren't the most expensive, and we liked their preocess. Once we got started, Vicki was a great help with design options to help me narrow choices and come up with cohesive look, and Daniel and Dave were very responsive with the day to day issues during the actual construction. Budget was right on target with what they said it would be. Only issue was it did run over on time, but at that point we were at finishing and were able to move in while they did the rest. Overall, very happy and would use them again.

Kelvin, Susan, Dave, Vicki, everyone at Commonwealth, including our project manager Daniel, were fantastic to work with. Patient, guiding, experts in what they do. Incredibly transparent, helpful, kind, and savvy. Will work with them for any future projects we made elect to do!

I contacted CHD after being referred by our friends. My initial interaction was with Kelvin, who visited our house to review the project. The visit lasted no more than 10 minutes, during which Kelvin came across as very dry and not engaging. He asked for my ideas, briefly reviewed the sketch I had prepared, and inquired about my budget.
Kelvin then stated that my project would cost as much as my kitchen remodel but offered no value engineering alternatives or additional ideas to align with my vision or budget. While I understand that some companies may only take on projects meeting a specific budget threshold, this could have been communicated upfront during the initial phone call, saving both time and effort.
Overall, it was a very unpleasant interaction.

We had an excellent experience with Commonwealth. We had them add on a screened porch with a basement addition below it that was actually deeper than our existing basement to support a golf simulator. It was a bit of a unique project and it went very smoothly.
From the start, we were really happy with how they had a transparent, up-front design and estimate process. We had a pretty solid design and specific cost estimate before we signed or paid anything. The final project ended up extremely close to the initial estimate.
Overall, they just have very high quality people from both a skill and an integrity perspective. There were multiple times throughout the project where I felt like the carpenter, project manager, sub-contractor, etc. went out of their way to do what was best for me, not for them. Their subcontractors are excellent. Their main carpenter, Angel, is amazing and a true master carpenter. He cares deeply about his work and it shows. He takes pride in every detail.
Overall, while they could be a little more tech-enabled (electronic payments, simpler visibility into timelines and progress), we really couldn't be happier with the process and the outcome. They built two incredible, beautiful spaces for us and we would recommend them in a heartbeat.

Commonwealth built a screened porch and deck for us about 25 years ago, and they still look great. We had them remodel the kitchen more recently, and a few months ago they remodeled two baths. They're professional and they follow through. The designs of all three are pleasing. Very happy.

We did a significant remodel of our 20 year old home with Commonwealth and it was fantastic from start to finish. This is a well oiled machine that is very professional and reliable with a high quality product. My biggest concern at the start was simply not getting what we we wanted and what we were paying for. We had heard horror stories of contractor ripoffs. Commonwealth was the opposite. They plan with you, they deliver excellent work, and also were flexible in the middle of the project to pivot when we wanted to changes and didn't penalize us. Two years after our warranties on the work expired we had a small issue and they popped over and just handled it. We've recommended them to dozens of friends and everyone who has used them has had a similar experience. Commonwealth is a sure thing.Services: Interior architectural design

My husband and I have never found a contractor better than Commonwealth…and we should know. Over the 25 years since Commonwealth put a major addition on our house in Herndon, VA, we have worked with at least 10 contractors in 4 different states. None could beat Kelvin and Susan, and most couldn’t even come close. We wish we could have convinced them to move with us every time we needed to do a home renovation or construction project. Every contractor we’ve worked with since 1997 has had to listen to us say repeated times, “Let me tell you about this contractor we worked with in Virginia” and then we launch into an often extensive tale of the kind of service, care, attention to detail, reliability, and just plain helpful advice throughout the process that we got from Kelvin and Susan. Our favorite story? How Commonwealth’s crew dismantled virtually the entire back wall of our house (which included the living room wall, where a 13-year-old’s slumber/birthday party was taking place), installed a steel beam, then completely framed the two-story addition, and had it sheathed and under roof—in one day! To this day, my husband wishes he’d bought a keg, set up chairs, and invited the neighbors over to watch—the crew worked like fine choreography and the foreman RAN the entire day. Not only was every bit of the work top notch but the crew protected our slumberers and the rest of the house. Yes, we lived in the house during the entire construction process—something, I realize now, was made possible because of Susan’s and Kelvin’s careful planning, and understanding/adapting to our situation (I was running a business—with 3 employees—in one of the rooms that was getting enlarged and whose back wall was removed that day). Now we find ourselves deliriously happy that a contractor at least tells us when the workers are not going to be there; with Kelvin, we never had to guess because he made sure the workers were ALWAYS there. I’m writing this 25 years later because that 13-year-old is now building an addition on her house in Northern Virginia and asked me for recommendations. Can you guess the only name I’ve offered her?!Services: Drywall installation

Commonwealth did a great job on a major renovations for us. They did an addition for us which increased the size of our house by over 50%. When we were considering doing the work, we talked with several contractors. We went with them initially for a few reasons: they are owned by a married couple where one is an architect and the other is an engineer, so we knew that neither would get short shrift on our project. But also, they were the only ones who came in with a vision to meet our goals after listening to what we wanted. Everyone on their staff was helpful, and knowledgeable. The final product looks great, and is exactly what we hoped for. I waited a year after to write this review, and everything is still in great shape. They have a one year warranty where they come back after a year to address anything that’s come up since then, and honored it. They even went through more carefully than we had, looking for any imperfections which arose in the last year just to touch up, which really went above and beyond our expectations. They did take about a month more than they predicted in their original schedule, and that was before the supply chain problems right now. But they met the cost we agreed upon up front, and we had no rework in the entire project.

Commonwealth Builders sent excellent craftsmen to repair a damaged floor from a leaking refrigerator and replace a large side panel to prepare a space for a new built-in refrigerator. Work was timely and well executed. We look forward to working with Commonwealth again!Services: Remodeling
