She will get down on the floor to greet a shy dog like mine and offers advice or share ideas on behavior and such. I will never go to another vet.”

“Our Rhodesian Ridgeback (Star, 5) started limping after the snowstorms and we assumed a sprained muscle. Dr Pate mentioned he wanted to see her again if the pills did not help. After not getting better it was discovered that she had Osteosarcoma. He put in a referral for us for a Vet in Henrico, but was very open with what this meant for our dog.

We chose pallative care. Dr Pate did not make us feel bad and continually checked in on Star to make sure she was doing ok or if she needed different meds. She did really well for 4 months following the diagnoses until we saw her light starting to dim and put her down.

I have seen Vets in the past that try and push treatments but respected the Dr Pate was honest and supported our decision to spend what time we had left with our dog in a happy way”

Dr. Roger is the type of vet who doesn’t just treat your pet—she sees them. She lovingly calls my rescue cats, Toby (7) and Gibby (14), “my babies” and treats them like they’re royalty with fur. Her honesty, empathy, and incredible depth of care turned what could’ve been a stressful experience into one of compassion and clarity.

When I was overwhelmed, trying to navigate hard questions about my best friends’ health, her team became a net of support. They weren’t just staff—they were practically therapists with stethoscopes. Every visit felt like a mix of expert care and emotional sanctuary.

“The entire staff including Dr. Bates vet doctor listens to my needs about my pets. I am severely hearing impaired, and they always speak so that I understand what is going on. They help me as a pet parent by providing support to show me how to properly administer medication ointment and cleaning tools to do correctly once at home for my pet to heal properly. I cannot say enough good things about them. They are truly wonderful people. My Henry is healing nicely and back to his spunky lil self.”
