This safeway is engaging in very illegal and secretive pricing tactics. If you order delivery, the manager doesnt like people getting stuff on sale, so he'll replace it with a more expensive item, usually a substitute for bulk pack of meat, and it'll be 2lbs of meat turns to .5 lbs and another .5 of vegetables that i'm allergic to. the Manager knows what he is doing, and Corporate Safeway has been told, but they're IN ON IT! They haven't returned any of my calls despite a ton of documentation about how this Safeway is committing fraud.

(I'd like to ideally give the store 3.5 stars but can't give half stars unfortunately). I've always been a huge Safeway fan. When I lived in Redmond, WA (for 25 years), Safeway was my go-to grocery store. I loved their selection, their prices, their store lay-outs, their pharmacy, their rewards program - pretty much everything. So I had high hopes when I visited this B'ham Safeway yesterday. I came here specifically looking for a few Passover foods that, while not obscure, I couldn't find elsewhere (i.e., Manischewitz cake mix). When I lived near Seattle, every year I got all my Passover stuff at the Redmond and Kirkland Safeways. (Even though these suburbs didn't have huge Jewish populations, they always carried basic foods for the holiday). Walking into this store from the parking lot, I smiled, as the store presented itself as the familiar friend I long knew and loved. Same layout, same cleanliness, same ready-made foods at the deli I knew oh so well. Same seasonal items in the middle of the store, same greeting card aisles.... I had missed it all so much. But as I wandered the aisles, I became less and less content with my old friend Safeway. I couldn't find ANY Passover foods save for a tiny, square free-standing case back near the rear of the store, and it barely had items on it, save for some macaroons and jellied chocolates (never a popular choice!). It was as if this tiny display was an afterthought. They had a few items I considered getting but the regular prices were WAY WAY higher than the "members' price" (and since I've moved to Canada, I no longer am a member of the Safeway rewards program). I looked high and low for someone to ask if they had the cake mixes I was specifically looking for, but there were no employees on the floor (and I walked down every aisle). I finally went to the front cash area and asked a nice lady by the self-service check counter if they had a Passover or kosher area. She walked me to an area in an aisle for their kosher foods and, I kid you not, there was next to nothing there. It's not like the shelves were empty; there just was little space for kosher foods, let alone Passover stuff. She pointed out the boxes of matzo there but even she noted that the boxes said "Not Kosher for Passover" on them. (She was super nice and apologized. I thanked her and said it wasn't her fault!). Anyhow, I felt disappointed by this store. Their non-member prices were high, they didn't really cater to their Jewish customers (surely they have some!), they didn't have folks on the floor to help clients.... it was a far cry from the Safeways I knew and loved in the Seattle area. I was pleased to see that their pharmacy area was well stocked and, outside, they had a decent gas station (with awesome prices, too - compared to Vancouver, anyhow!). And the store was impeccably clean, and they had a nice deli and bakery section. And the lady who tried to help me was very pleasant. So I guess if you are a rewards member here and you don't care about "ethnic" foods, you'd be quite happy here. Me, not so much.

I got some crab and it was so good I went back the next day for more. Also, the employee here, Janet, was amazing. Kind and nice. She cut out the guts out of the crab (it was also not crowded at the time) but overall, just a very pleasant experience. Thank u Janet. :)

When the Pfizer Booster first became available in September for people 65 and over, I telephoned this pharmacy and was told to come in the next morning. When I arrived, I was (mis)informed that the Booster was only for people with compromised medical conditions. I did not argue but I was very concerned that the Pharmacist was so misinformed and spoke to me in such a condescending manner. I then went home, made an online appointment with Rite Aid for the following day. I did indeed receive my Booster on 9/25/2021 and needless to say, I will never trust nor patronize this pharmacy ever again.

The store is really good majority of the time. The deli area is okay. But the one thing that really is upsetting is that at 5 in the evening the busiest time for a deli to be in service they're out of food and they don't anticipate having any more food at various choices. This hasn't just been a one-off is becoming a common occurrence I wish they'd get their act together

Went to Safeway to get clams for my birthday dinner and all of the clams were dead. You could smell them on the other side of the counter, really disturbing.

How can a large grocery store not have ANY rye bread? There wasn't any prepackaged or artisan/bakery rye bread. Asked an employee and he confirmed that there was nowhere else they might have it. So weird!!

I went to the hot case at the deli for lunch like I often do and it was practically empty. I asked the lady behind the counter if she was going to have some more items ready soon. Her response was that she "doesn't usually keep those items in the case." A total lie! I shop there regularly so I know what items they usually serve. She then said that she could cook them for me but made it clear that it was a huge inconvenience and it would take an exaggerated amount of time. I was so put off by the whole interaction that I just put the rest of my groceries down and left the store.

Two things have particularly pleased me about this Safeway. I think they've been doing a responsible job of helping people stay safe from COVID. And to my delight, I have been very pleased with their selection of ethnic food items. I moved here from larger metropolises, and this is the best "regular" grocery store I've found here that provides for a broader palate.

The manager of this store just mistreated a family member after ASSUMING he was shop lifting. He swore at him, grabbed the merchandise and was completely unprofessional in his handling of this situation. When a receipt to prove purchase was shown, the manager failed to apologize for his behavior. We can not condone or tolerate this kind of mistreatment. No one should ever have to be treated in this manner. There are a few other great stores in our area. I hope you consider spending your hard earned money in an establishment that doesn't behave in such an unprofessional and hurtful way.
