The place was clean, easy to find, and looked nice. Whoever I spoke with to book my appointment was very professional and made the booking process simple and easy. I showed up to my appointment early and didn’t have to wait long.Unfortunately, that’s where my positive review ends.My stylist didn’t greet me or speak to me at all other than to ask where I’d like my part. This isn’t a dealbreaker, but it does make the experience less pleasant when you’re not treated with any degree of hospitality. The negative experience stems from my stylist abruptly walking away in the middle of retightening my locs, without saying a word to me, and beginning working on another client. After about 15min of my extended patience, another stylist (Sage) let me know she’d be with me shortly once she finished with the client she was currently working with; after a 30min total wait time she came over and worked on my hair for a while. When the stylist who had originally started my hair (I don’t remember her name as she never introduced herself or spoke to me) finished with her other client, she came back and took over doing my hair.Being completely honest, I had every intention of leaving a negative review based on the that.Sage was very professional. After my hair was finished, she came over and apologized for how long my hair took (5hr). The receptionist also apologized for how long it took and explained about they had been short a stylist that day. The length of time wasn’t terrible; I’ve had long re-tightenings in the past. What bothered me was the lack of communication. I completely understand that these are students, but they’re also adults working in a customer-centered industry; why isn’t basic customer service emphasized? It should have been communicated early on that my stylist was filling in for another and would have to step away (I don’t know if that’s why, it’s my assumption based off context clues), not after my hair was finished and I was walking out the door.I can honestly say that in the entirety of my time there I witnessed 30 second conversation that took place between a client and a stylist. Other than that the stylists only spoke to one another. Again, it’s not obligatory to speak to your clients, but if you want them to feel comfortable and welcome, maybe reconsider. The facility is nice and I liked how my hair turned out, but my overall experience was not a pleasant one.Service: Dreadlocks

Went for crochet locs. The stylist was friendly and the overall shop was run professionally. The locs I came in wearing have different color variations and highlights and I asked for the stylist to put them back in the same way; another stylist suggested she take a picture, but she did not. It wasn't until she was basically finished that I realized that she hadn't put the lighter ones on top like I'd requested, so this took extra time to fix, and the appointment ended up being four hours long, which is more than I'm used to. What was most concerning was that I had several locs fall out the next day. My natural hair is fairly long and thick, and I assumed the shop would take care to secure the cornrows to my head (my old stylist uses string to sew them together), but to my surprise, there were only a few small bobby pins holding them in place, which is why they fell down. I emailed the shop about the issue and they responded promptly, inviting me back for a "tightening" (but not making it clear what they would do differently). I explained that I live far away and have a busy schedule, but asked for future reference if the appointment would be free (as it should be, in my opinion, as I have never before had locs fall out like this, and I shouldn't have to pay extra to correct subpar work). I got no response, and even sent a follow-up email in case they had forgotten to respond, but it's been five days and I still haven't heard anything. While I admire the overall culture of the shop, and can understand the error in the context of it being a training facility, the radio silence around my question, which suggests that I would need to pay extra for them to correct their own mistake, left a bad taste in my mouth. I'd be wary of booking them for crochet locs if you have long hair.

I had an interesting experience with Tanika the hair technician, her customer service needs work, she made it a point to call her boss right in front of me and complain about the mis understanding regarding the service I wanted, there were a few other issues that didn’t make me feel valued as a customer. Plus You have to be EXTREMELY DETAILED AND SPECIFIC as to what you want, I thought what I was getting was a basic braid which costs only $60 but the grand total ended up being $125, that hairstyle was definitely over priced. There dust on the light fixtures was so thick I could peel it off with a butter knife. This shop sells their own hair products also. The only good thing is that someone is usually available when calling this business.

The worst hairstylist in the world. Ask for simple thick 2 strand twist. Didn’t even wash or blow dry my hair. Work on my hair while it was dry!! Comb my hair while it was dry causing my scalp to be blood shot red!! I constantly asked for the twist to be thick and the lady kept saying the part is thick when I constantly told her I wanted a thicker twist and she was unable to provide me that. There is no way people actually go to this shop and get their hair did. Worst hairstylist EVER!

So...I am really annoyed. Missing my appointment today was partially my fault, but had I been able to speak with someone beforehand I feel that it could've been avoided. My issue is that I've been calling this salon since last week just to get clarification about directions because I'm not familiar with Seattle and recently relocated to Burien, and I was trying to avoid the exact thing that happened today. My appointment was scheduled for 10am, and a stylist called me at precisely 9:57am to let me know that my stylist would be running late due to transit services running behind. Cool. I told her that was no problem and to tell the stylist to take her time because I was also running behind for the same reason and had mistakenly gotten on the wrong bus. After getting on the right bus I called the same number back at least three times to ask which direction to go when exiting the bus. No one ever answered so I tried guessing. I guessed wrong. The stylist called me back about 10 minutes later to tell me that I was going in the wrong direction and would have to reschedule. I explained to her that I had been calling the same number that called me this morning to get better directions, and her condescending response was, "This is my personal phone, and I'm at work. I don't answer my phone when I'm working." Okay...but why would you call me from it in the first place? It's not like anyone ever answers the main line.My problem isn't about me having to reschedule because I take accountability for being late. My issue is that no one ever answers the phone, and that is completely unacceptable. Not only did I try to get directions beforehand, but I have also been trying to inquire about the process of an additional service before booking it online. My advice? Go to their Tacoma or Federal Way location for better customer service. If they don't answer their phone at those locations, they always call back in a timely manner. I sure do wish I still lived close by there because Trina ALWAYS showed me the utmost respect, returned my calls, and she kept my hair laid. Just go to I Am Loc Shop in Federal Way or Tacoma. The service is always good.

Stunning excellence shop and a lovely secretary! This was whenever I first visited this spot, and I am extremely happy that I went to them since each of my requests were tended to. It was an optimal choice for me. The most respectable excellence shop around to suggesting with family and colleagues. Approval!

Years ago I went for a deep condition and trim, and left with my hair feeling dry and looking unfinished. They blow dried it but it didn’t look very nice and I had to promptly go to target to buy some product to put in my hair and make it feel moisturized. Recently a client had to tell the owner to wear her mask during COVID because they were not taking health and safety precautions.

I love coming here. Tamika is very knowledgeable of how to do all types of natural hair. I am in good hands with her.4 stars because they never answer their phone. It's right down the street for me so it's not an issue usually, but i have to go in to reschedule.
