Haggen in Snohomish is one of the most inviting grocery stores in the area, but it trails both PCC, Sprouts, and even the Woodinville Haggen in freshness and modern feel. It could move from a dependable local market to a real destination store by emphasizing the qualities those competitors do best.
The foundation is strong — excellent produce, quality meats, and friendly staff — but several changes would elevate it:
– Broaden organic and local sourcing (especially herbs, mushrooms, and greens) to match PCC’s farm-direct selection.
– Introduce lighter, fresh-prepared options and fewer heavy deli items — Sprouts excels here with bowls, wraps, and plant-forward meals.
– Use clear signage to showcase local farms, makers, and seasonal highlights.
– Refresh interior design with warmer wood tones, greenery, and natural light — the Woodinville Haggen feels brighter and more current.
– Add ingredient transparency in the bakery, deli, and hot bar — customers increasingly expect clarity about sourcing and nutrition.
– Consider vendor pop-ups or community tastings to give the space more local energy and connection.
Snohomish Haggen has the people and product quality to compete with top-tier grocers; it just needs to evolve its presentation and focus on freshness and identity the way PCC, Sprouts, and its Woodinville sibling already have.

A wide variety of foods and helpful staff. It is more expensive, but great aside from that. An amazing place for those with dietary restrictions.

It's sad to see grocery stores shifting from personal, customer-focused service to a more impersonal, efficiency-driven model. Many stores now require customers to be trained as clerks and checkers through self-checkout systems. What used to be a simple, friendly experience—chatting with a familiar cashier or getting help from staff—has turned into an automated, do-it-yourself process.
Feels like we're losing the personal touch that made grocery shopping pleasant. It's more convenient for stores but less connected for communities, as we're asked to do the jobs that staff used to do, all in the name of efficiency.
Haggen's is now under another threat from a potential takeover by Kroger, a giant in the grocery industry. A real concern lies in the monopolistic control they will have over food prices. If Kroger succeeds in swallowing up Haggen’s, they will effectively control the market, setting prices as they see fit with little to no competition. This could have disastrous effects on inflation, especially for working families who rely on fair and stable grocery prices.
A corporate giant like Kroger doesn’t just threaten the livelihood of Haggen’s it threatens the financial stability of everyone in the town. Kroger could easily manipulate prices to their advantage, contributing to rising costs that put more pressure on already strained household budgets. Small communities like ours are especially vulnerable to these shifts, where one price hike at the grocery store can significantly impact family incomes.
Kroger simply won’t be able to offer personal friendly service, as their bottom line is driven by profits rather than community welfare.
As we face the reality of this takeover

What is up with Haggen not caring that they are sellling expired/spoiled food? You point it out to a worker, and they basically shrug and say, Oh well. The milk is on sale, and it all expired yesterday. I check all dates and continuously find expired food on the shelves. Buyers beware for sure.

Where to start. Walk in and am amazed at all the beautiful produce they have, this store has a great selection of not only produce but of pretty much everything.
We did an average shop and were pretty surprised at how much we spent. I wasn’t really paying attention to prices for normal stuff but when I looked at the receipt things like frozen orange juice concentrate was twice the cost I normally pay. The more I looked the more I realized that everything was quite a bit more than what I normally pay. I figure ok, may not a place for our weekly grocery’s but could be great for special occasions. I actually don’t mind paying a little more for quality or unique items. However…. 75% of the produce I bought went bad within a few days. I am very selective when I shop and everything looked good at the time I bought it. The steaks I bought looked good and had a use by date almost a week out. The next day when I opened it there was a strong smell and the flavor was off as well. They must have taken an old pice of meat, cut off the brown old bits and repackaged and redacted it. What a bummer, nice looking store but they do some shady stuff

The hot Asian food counter is the worst! Makes me sick to my stomach every time I try any of their chicken entrees. Probably unclean cooking practices in the back. Best to avoid at all costs. The rest of the grocery store is legit though.
