We reserved a full-size car to accommodate our family of four and our carry-on luggage. When we arrived late at night, the agent told us he had "upgraded us" to a Dodge Hornet, which he described as a mid-sized SUV. I told him we would rather stick with a full-size sedan, but he said none were available. The Dodge Hornet is a compact crossover at best, and we could only fit 3 carry-on rollaboard bags in the tiny cargo area. It was also extremely cramped for the rear seat passengers. We went back inside and asked for a larger vehicle we could actually fit in, and were told we could pay more to upgrade to a Ford Explorer (which at least actually IS a midsized SUV). I felt we should not be charged extra for an SUV we really didn't want, just to get the same carrying capacity as the full-size car we reserved in the first place. The guy essentially said take it or leave it, and at midnight with the other rental agencies already closed, we were forced to take it. Needless to say, this left a very bad taste in my mouth.Hey Avis: If you don't actually have a full-size car on the lot, don't allow us to reserve one! And if unforseen circumstances arise, take ownership and provide a suitable substitute at YOUR expense, not mine! You conned a few extra bucks out of us this time, but I assure you I have a long memory.

Every time I'm in Spokane on my business trips, I'm impressed by the friendliness and helpfulness of their staff. They do their best to be accommodating.

Not until I returned the car and got the receipt email did I realised that I was charged $130 USD more than the price showed on the original booking ($220 USD). I am sure that I said no to additional insurance coverage at pick up however the staff still added it. And when I used the stylus to sign on that tiny screen I couldn’t read everything in detail. I guess this is how Avis rip people off and their staff are probably trained to do it or getting commission to do this. They are so good at hiding it without people realising. Car was ok. I will not use Avis ever again. Been in US multiple times and never had such disgusting and disappointing experience with Hertz or Budget.EDIT:Contacted them as they asked. Was told they can only refund me half of the insurance that I did not ask for and they said at the end of the day I did benefit from the insurance. I requested this matter to be escalated to management and got told they can't call me to discuss just because I don't have a local phone number. It is 2024 and this excuse is embarrassing. Please be extremely careful when booking with Avis because they can just add things on without you even realising. They went ahead and only refunded half of the insurance cost that I did not ask for. No one called me to discuss anything. They just did it so I can shut up? Should I be grateful I even got half back? It is disgusting. The ugly female staff who served me at pick up, shame on you.

I’ll preface my review with the fact that I always use Enterprise for car rentals, but they were fully booked so I went with Avis. They had one person working the counter and there was a huge line. The vehicle I got was dirty not only on the outside, but on the inside as well. None of the charging ports work in the vehicle. Also the back glass of the trunk was open when I got it and I couldn’t figure out how to close it. Nobody helped me to my vehicle or told me any special features. Would not recommend this car rental service.

Pickup process was super efficient. Only took a couple of minutes since they allow you to prefill all info beforehand. Dropoff was easy as well, and no hidden fees!

The car was marginal, a Subaru with about 40,000 miles on it. The driver side window malfunctioned on and off. I was unable to get my Bluetooth connected to the car. Middle consul was difficult to read and use.The woman at pickup was less than friendly. Not a great overall experience.

The upgrade was absolutely amazing from a compact vehicle to a Lincoln Navigator. Although it took this old timer about 20 minutes to figure out how to operate it it was well worth the lesson! Thank you Avis!

UPDATED 10/20/23 - in the middle of the night a MONTH after our rental the company attempted to charge my card for another $125.00. This is the amount we were given as a partial refund for the HORRENDOUS pick up experience. I'm reporting it as fraud and will be completing a charge back if they end up trying again.UPDATED 9/21/23 - check in time 8:40 am.We reserved a hybrid electric in July 12 to pick up on 9/21/23 in the morning. We arrived and were met with a very disheveled and rude employee Grant. We said we had a rental reserved and he said he didn't have any hybrid electric cars ready! Three months to be prepared for us. When I tried to speak up about the fact I'd booked months ago he put his hand to my face and said to stop with my "diatribe" and that he could have one ready in 30 - 45 minutes from now. Then came back and said he couldn't rent that to us due to mechanical reasons. We ended up in a non hybrid that was completely bare bones and very uncomfortable. I'm really disgusted by the way this man treated us. We travel VERY often and rent often through Avis. He honestly just seemed like a disgruntled an employee happy to ruin people's days. Keeping employees like this on your staff ruins your brand. Please examine why your employees are so unhappy and why you can't seem to make good on the inventory you say is available for reserve. Total night and day experience and not for the positive.

We're just getting to the end of a 13 day hire, so I can't comment on the hand back process yet. However, my wife and I wanted to give a special shout out to Dena at the rentals desk. We arrived at Spokane on Saturday evening, but unfortunately, our luggage didn't make it! We'd arranged for an Avis hire from Sunday morning, so had planned to come back from the nearby Holiday Inn the next morning, and had planned to use their shuttle bus that night and again in the morning. Well, no shuttle bus to be seen, and the hotel didn't answer their phone. Apart from the staff at the car rentals desk, the place was deserted, and there was not a taxi to be seen anywhere. So, we went to the Avis desk, and Dana tried contacting the hotel for us as well, and when they didn't answer, she offered to take us over in her own car. What a lovely gesture, and so appreciated. Dena, you're a star, thank you! Hopefully the handback in a couple of days will be smooth too.

I've always used budget rental car companies as I'm cheap. But I had a coupon for Avis and thought I'd give it a try. All-in-all, the best car rental experience ever. The rental vehicle was a super clean and nearly new Mazda CX-90 which was a remarkable vehicle and a pleasure to drive. Avis staff were very friendly and efficient, both at drop-off, pick-up, and when I needed to change my reservation due to contracting COVID. But where they really shone was how they reacted to a flat tire in a remote location (the tire was no fault of Avis). They literally drove a flat bed for 2 hours from the nearest location to pick up the disabled vehicle and to drop off a replacement. A tight logistical challenged as needed to the car to reach the airport 3 hours away the next morning. Extra special kudos to their roadside department for their patience, resource and speedy resolution to a logistically challenging situation. Well done, Avis.

I reserved a Suburban, or comparable size SUV, for a total of $450ish…but when we arrived we were given a Traverse, which was not going to work. I said what I reserved and the man said he wasn’t sure he had anything that size. He ended up finding an Armada (perfect size), but said it’s an upgrade so it would be an additional $78 per day! I reminded him that our reservation was for this size car and had the reservation that showed the price. We got no where. We had no choice but to accept the “upgrade” because we had to get on the road immediately. Avis immediately took $780 out of our credit card account, which is a substantial amount for us, and we had to change our hotel plans around due to this over charge. While we were on our way back to return the vehicle, wildfires ravaged the area and a 3hr detour was put into place. We had also learned that four individual family members had completely lost their homes in said fires. We called several numbers to communicate this to Avis, but we only received either voicemails or messages that said we had reached them after business hours. We eventually returned home to a closed Avis counter. The very next morning, we brought the vehicle in full of gas, explained why it was late and that we had tried to call, and the lady brushed us off. As I was walking to my own personal car, I received the invoice. Avis charged us a total of $875 dollars for our rental!!!! So the $400 that we had budgeted for turned into a financial nightmare!! I am so incredibly disappointed with the lack of transparency, inability to communicate with the company while on the road, and their incapacity to understand how their business practices impacts an everyday mid class family. No transparency = no trust with them.

Worst experience I've had. Did a vacation rental package thru priceline and paid for everything up front. After a 13hr flight with my child went to pick up my car was charged an additional $49 by Avis without explanation other then its what they charge. Being exhausted I didn't understand it and front deak personal wouldn'texplain it. I had requested an economic car that could sit 5, the next morning when we went to go see family we hadn't seen in yrs I found out the car was NOT a 5 seater and was only a 4 seater with a dedicated cup holder in the back so you couldn't sit a third even if we wanted to. Then I tried multiple times to reach someone at the front desk with no response and routed to a global number that told me to call the local office and refused to help me as well. To go back to the local office and see if they had the right car would've taken 1 to 2 hrs each way and away from my vacation and family time to possibly find out they didn't or wouldn't be able to help me.Then I find out I was charged an additional fee without explanation even tho I dropped off the car with a full tank of gas and before my drop off time. Priceline tried to help but couldn't reach anyone either and kept having the line disconnected.

We were scheduled to rent a Kia-Soul. When we were talking to the gal behind the counter about the car. She asked where we were heading. When we told her we were driving to Florida. She stopped and said wait, let me check on something. That's when she said she changed the car with her boss's permission to a different car.The reason was the scheduled car had way to many miles on it for her to send us all that way. She wanted a car with less miles in case anything happened. That is an employee who has customers safety first. We appreciated her so much.
