It saddens me to write this but I can no longer recommend Waves Studio. I had been going there for several years with excellent results, 5 stars. But when I wanted to change my hairstyle a few months ago the stylist refused to do what I requested even after I sent her 2 pictures which she ignored. I asked her to add some bangs to my style — we had been letting them grow out and they were impossible to deal with, always hanging in my face — and she refused, telling me I just had to “use more hairspray and learn how to deal with it”. When I asked her to add some texturizing/layering so my hair wasn’t so flat and shapeless on top she actually said “ugh” and didn’t do it.
As soon as I got home after the appointment the first thing I did was cut my own bangs to get the look I wanted — and it looks SO MUCH better. Also, at this same appointment she cut my husband’s long wavy hair into a straight chin-length “bowl” cut instead of texturizing and layering it as he had requested. I reshaped and texturized his hair as soon as we got home and now it looks the way it was supposed to. I have no idea why she ignored our reasonable requests, I’m guessing she didn’t want us as clients anymore.
This salon does an awesome job on standard “cookie cutter” haircuts but if you want a more individual personalized style I would strongly advise going elsewhere. Like I did.

Theresa Hoa-Le is an absolute gem as well as now a dear, dear friend. I have trusted her with my hair and my various styles for too many years to mention! She is very honest...first time I met her and she noticed I sometimes permed my hair, she just said, "Why?" She has seen me through weaves, short, long, curly, wavy, and always knows what is right for me - especially in all those years with a convertible! She also gives the most divine head rubs before a cut. I decided to embrace my natural color several years ago and she has supported a classy longish look to grow older along with me. I always leave knowing my head has been in good hands :)

Sandy is as good as it gets. She does a fabulous cut, style and color that is individualized to match each gal. Many of us go to her, yet none of us looks the same. Many years ago, at a convention, Jose' Ebar, Palm Desert, cut and styled my hair and although it was done well ($400 in the 90's), the other attendees and I left his studio with a similar cut, style and color. Not so with Sandy! I recently had lunch with 4 friends whose hair each looked striking and which enhanced our own characteristics. It's truly a gift and Sandy has it. Another, less mentioned but not less important quality is that she is trustworthy and encouraging, remembering details and asking about other aspects of your life, then often offering ideas that improve the quality of it. Sandy is a gem and although challenging to get in with initially, once she gets to know you, she pre books for future appts, as many as 3 ahead to keep you on a schedule. The location, between Maple and Ash on Gardner, makes it a snap to get downtown or back up to the South Hill. I have gone to her for 5 yrs. and knowing her has definitely increased the quality of my life. She is worth the wait to get an appointment. Surprisingly for someone of her ability, she is also reasonably priced. If you call and don't get in right away, keep calling, it's worth the effort and wait.

I have been seeing Sandy at Waves since she was in school. After moving around a bit and having to see other hair stylists, I can say Sandy is by far my favorite. She always makes sure she knows exactly what I want, even though it is the same every time. The house they converted into a studio was renovated beautifully! I look forward to going in every time. They are popular though, so you have to book well in advance!
