This place is the epitome of a hidden gem, in almost a literal sense given its lack of external signage! My partner and I were on our way back from visiting family in the northwest corner of the state, and found ourselves stranded far from home when their alternator cut out mid-drive. We coasted into Hixton as the motor died, and after getting as settled as we could at the motel post-tow, we set out on foot along the highway on a hunt for an alternative food source from the gas station. 20 minutes later, we apprehensively arrived at the Brookside Tavern, and upon opening the door, I realized it was clearly the kind of place that didn't often see a lot of non-regular patrons, let alone young queer couples from Madison. But I don't think that part was on the forefront of the staff or patrons' minds - I think once I opened my mouth, they just saw us as a young couple in a bad situation who needed some warm food and kindness, which we received plentifully. The staff had already shut off the grill given the hour on a Sunday night, but they reignited it just for us and brought us incredible burgers, fries, and generously poured drinks, all for prices I hadn't seen so low since childhood. Some folks at the bar even offered us a ride back to the motel so we didn't have to walk. We left with full stomachs and hearts - frankly, everyone's hospitality really restored my faith in humanity. I can't guarantee we'll be back in Hixton soon given the circumstances that brought us there, but if we ever find ourselves in the area again, we'll be sure to stop by.

More crowded than usual because of early morning Packers game. Lots of camaraderie. Owner friendly and welcoming. Nicki, the bartender, friendly, helpful, patient and efficient. Nicki made the best bloody Mary's and mimosas. The complimentary brunch food was delicious.
