Hello, I would like to take the time to thank the Salvation Army of Dane County for providing housing and nutritious meals. I arrived at the Salvation Army mid October, 2022. I had only been in Madison since August 2022. I lived in Chicago all my life so this was definitely a scary experience never leaving my hometown before. Although, I was met with homelessness I knew God would have to be by my side to make it though the biggest obstacle in life HOMELESSNESS. There was so many times I just wanted to give up but I just didn't know how to give up. So, the only option left was to fight. I was mentally, emotionally and physically exhausted. The homelessness for me started in mid June in Chicago now it's October and still no place to call home. On October18, 2022 the doors open for me at the Salvation Army I was scared, nervous and hopeful. I know I had plenty work ahead of me. I wasn't sure what to expect but I was ready for whatever challenge there was for me to face. Essential needs were provided for me food, clothing when available and a warm bed every night. I received meals that was prepared with a lot of love. Melissa McClain worked as an exceptional Case Manager. Melissa provided necessary apartment leads, information about accessible apartment, referral information for therapy, bus cards for use to make necessary business appointments. Melissa returned my calls in a timely manager, she always communicated any updates with me. I felt what Melissa provided is exactly what I needed which was hope. I finally feel like the is a road opening I just need to find that road. I must say for the first time I am feeling very hopeful. So, I decided I must help myself also. I applied for a senior apartment and I was offered a one bedroom apartment. However, I developed Covid and spent the next 10 days at The Microtel. I applied for the apartment on November 18, 2022 and I moved in on December 5, 2022. This year will mark 2 years in my new apartment. Chloe is another Case Manager that worked with me she was always so excited to help and she always smiled which made me happy. Positive energy is the key. Chloe went above and beyond with the help she assisted me with once I moved in my apartment.
I feel because I was afforded the opportunity to be housed and provided with the essentials I needed during that time. I was able to use that time to plan my future and figure out "where do I go from here" I didn't know the answer at first. So, I decided to transition from disability to employment. During the time I was displaced I had been disabled since 2005. So, my goal is to transition to employment I haven't worked since 2002. However, with the support from the Salvation Army I didn't have to think about bills, food, transportation or where I would sleep from day to day. I used that opportunity to plan my future. So, in January 2023 I reached out to the DVR to discuss my transition from disability to employment. I enrolled in Madison College HSED 5.09 program to acquire my high school credential. I started Madison College GED program in June, 2023. I am happy to report that I completed the program in January 2024. I will be graduating in May, 2024 with my diploma. I started school at Madison College in the Accounting Assistant Program January 2024. I will complete my first semester as a college student in two weeks. I plan to attend school this summer also. I'll take 2 classes this summer Personal Finance and Business Spreadsheets. I can't wait to continue my journey.
If it wasn't for the Salvation Army of Dane County I'm not sure where I would be. However, because of the Salvation Army of Dane County my life is filled with hope not hopelessness. Whatever happens in life never give up. I didn't give up now the sky will be the limit for me. The sky can be the limit for you.
I'm sharing this post in hopes that it reach current and future donors who support the Salvation Army because your support is needed and greatly appreciated.

I just want to take the time and say thank you to the staff at the Salvation Army. They have always opened their door for me when I needed them most, I have fell on hard times which was out of my control but they helped me. Never had a problem with any of the staff there I was 7 months pregnant cleaning the bathrooms and keeping up with my chores I was assigned. I was thankful to have hot meals, and a warm place to sleep till I got on my feet. God Bless you all thank you.

Lack of professionalism. Constant Chaotic Toxic environment. No accountability amongst staff or clients. Lack of safety and security. Biased. Little to no compassion. Staff should be objective and not subjective. Need to be consistent. So Much needs to be improved upon. Question is, do they even realize this?Building and rooms need a complete cleaning from floor to ceiling. Zero community. No continuity.

I use to live at this place 30 yrs ago when I did there was never any current magazines for me to read ( they had books and some old out of date magazines) I vowed if I got a place I would find a way to bring current magazines up there because I understood those women situations!! For 29 years I have brought magazines monthly ( I was told someone goes threw them and gets rid of the older ones) even in August 2022!! TODAY September 27th 2022 I went there and was told they don't take donations by a lady who was not NICE, quite RUDE...these magazines were not nor ever been a donation like clothing...it was my way of giving back to them for 30years ago!! Until today...this marks the end of era im sorry those ladies won't have nothing to read that's current!! I done my part, give back what I could!! Now it's over!! ?

I mean idk what else people are expecting from a homeless shelter... There's plenty of donated bedding, 3 meals a day (even if it's soggy fish sticks, it's SOMETHING if you have nothing), the cots are surprisingly pretty comfortable... There's showers, towels available to use, plus shampoo, conditioner, soap, deodorant, disposable razors, cheap toothbrushes, toothpaste, and buckets full of tampons and pads. Unlike the men's shelter, you can actually stay throughout the day. I think check-in time should be longer than one hour a day, but idk the staffing situation. I never had any huge problems with the staff, sometimes some of them were rude but mostly if you don't make trouble for them they won't make any for you. If you're there for a week, you're supposed to get a caseworker... I was there 2 weeks and never got offered one. But I didn't ask, either. Oh, and my expensive prescription glasses were stolen while I was there. Don't leave behind anything valuable. Or get a suitcase with a lock, if you can. I wish they'd have let us have a locker for stuff like that... Oh well.In general, it's better than sleeping on the street. You get a bed, food, and a shower. It could have been much worse.
