It is probably an understatement to call Denny a master luthier. He is an artist, an innovator, a wizard, an engineer, and a craftsman of the highest order. Since the first instrument I brought to Denny nearly 20 years ago, he has been a mentor and collaborator, offering feedback and guidance about what might work best for my instrument and technique. He has always been friendly and honest, operating with utmost integrity. I appreciate that he has been open to some of my experimental requests. There’s something profound about leaving an instrument with Rauen Guitars; it undoubtedly comes back imbued with some magic. Thank you, Denny, for your years of amazing service!!

Denny is a fascinating luthier. He has now worked on three different guitars of mine, each with three different types of repairs. And each time, he has knocked it out of the park. He is a very nice and caring man as well. I love his story about meeting Leo Fender and the joy he has when telling it. Denny is very passionate about his craft. I highly recommend him for any of your guitar repair needs!

Rauen Guitars recently reset the neck and refretted my 1976 Martin D35. The results are spectacular! The guitar plays and sounds better than it has since I purchased it in 1976, and the new frets are a work of art. Many thanks to Denny and Jeff for resurrecting this gem of a guitar. It was worth every penny. Jjc

Denny restored my Gibson L5. It was severely damaged from a fall. He was able to fix the crack while maintaining the beautiful tone that had developed from over 40 years of playing.

Went there a while ago to have the action updated on a Martin 00-15M acoustic guitar, and who I'm assuming was the owner (older man with a gray beard) acted very snobbish and condescending to me after I tried to explain the buzzing I was hearing when I would play barre chords ( I tune two steps down to C). He even suggested that I needed to "take lessons" when all I did was bring in my guitar to have the action fixed. I find this very disrespectful. I have been playing guitar for over a decade, toured the US multiple times, and do not need to be chastised by some hack who probably can't even write his own music. Wade's Guitar Shop (3490 N Oakland Ave) was able to fix the issue with my guitar, and did so in a professional manner. I had moved to Riverwest just prior to my visit to Rauen Guitar (Center & Humboldt) and was planning on making this my go-to shop for strings & gear, but have decided that this place just doesn't deserve my patronage or money. If you are going to be rude to someone who is just trying to get something checked out with their guitar, then you need to be prepared to lose business.

Denny Rauen is the best luthier in Milwaukee, hands down. The quality of his workmanship outstrips all others; it's not close. But what's more, he's a human being—a decent guy who will admit human error, and then go the extra mile to correct it. A rare quality, today. Do yourself a favor and check out Rauen Guitars, the best that Milwaukee has to offer.
