“My wife and I dropped by the Artful Apparel & More Gallery on High Street in Mineral Point for the first time this past weekend. The owner and artist, Kathleen Nutter, was busy working at a beautiful old loom and greeted us warmly . Her gallery is richly full of her work. Everything caught our eye. We ended up leaving with what is labeled a Drum Top -Long made with linen and cotton. We bought it because it reminds us of a Japanese unisex haori top and because it is simply exquisite. We lived in Japan for a few years and the Kathleen Nutter piece is something we would expect to stumble upon down some narrow side street in Kyoto in a simply marked, small shop where generations of a weaver family have been making apparel there for centuries: It has that kind of feel in terms of quality of the work as well as the design. Our Mineral Point “haori coat” is something either my wife or I would wear without hesitation to a Noh play or to a tea ceremony in Japan or when we are cruising our favorite haunts be it here in Mineral Point or in New York City. It is such a rare gift to be able to pick up a piece of wearable art. And that is exactly what we brought home thanks to the weaving mastery of Kathleen Nutter.”
