We stopped in on a whim after a visit to Fossil Butte National Monument, and it was a fantastic surprise! There were lots of fossils to look at and buy. The owner is very friendly and knowledgeable about the fossils and the area. He shared so many interesting things about how they find the fossils and how they bring them out of the stone. Plus, if you have the time you can go and dig up a fossil of your own! Definitely stop in and check it out if you’re in the area and support this small business.

The family and I had 2 days so we booked at Ulrich's and one of the other places. I wish we would have booked at Ulrich's the entire time. The other place felt like a Walmart with mass market goods, tons of people and no personal attention. The other place had a machine dump rocks in a line, with tens of folks frantically trying to get to the best rocks first. We were there for hours and not one person helped us - we were an inconvenience if anything. At Ulrich's, we had a guide assigned to our group that explained everything step by step and stayed with us to help extract the fossils and explain what were we getting. We have young kids and the guide made it extra special for them. Here is the killer - the Nordstrom experience that was Ulrich's was close to the same price as the Walmart experience of the other guys. My advice - go to Ulrich's!

After visiting one of the other fossil quarries nearby, I am so happy we did Ulrich's second. It was a by far a way better experience than the other quarry. The other one seemed more touristy and had us going through what seemed to be their leftovers. At Ulrich's it was quite the opposite. Our guide Tyler had us pulling great fossils straight out of the rock wall. We found many large, whole fish on large slabs including some with numerous fish on them. You couldn't ask for a better guide, Tyler was absolutely awesome! He got right to work pulling up huge slabs for us to search through and did all the heavy lifting, all the while giving us some really insightful information about the area, the fossils, the history, etc. Mike was manning the shop and working on some fossils when we arrived and when we left, and he was very personable and made sure we were happy with our day...and we sure were. If you can only do one quarry, visit Ulrich's. They'll get you the good stuff.

Flew out to WY from FL with the sole purpose of digging Green River Formation fish fossils. Was here for a week, so I figured I would try out a few of the quarries local to Kemmerer and the Fossil Butte National Monument. Made a reservation for Ulrich’s a few days in. Boy, I wish I had came here first. The other quarries felt like I was at a “gem mine” - one of those ones you see in the Carolinas where they hand you a bucket of dirt and sift through for pre-packed gems. There were rows of pre-cut rock that you were assigned to, with heavy machinery adding more rows and clearing away the old. Everyone getting a hammer and one chisel. Filtering people through for maximum personnel and profit. This was not the case at Ulrich's. Here, you actually removed the rock layers from the quarry walls. You split the rocks with helpful guidance when you want it. You can be left to work on your own if you desire as well. You are provided with ample tools, needed to uncover the dark-colored beautiful specimens hidden between the rock layers. Was truly a night and day difference- I really was digging for fossils, not gleaning through tailings.I ended up going to Ulrich’s every day for the rest of my trip. The pricing was right, and the hunts were fantastic. I absolutely recommend this place. Mike and his team are too notch. Heck, I got some really great specimens out of this hunt too.If you’re not coming here, you’re doing it wrong.

We stayed near Fossil Butte for 2 nights and had a magical time with Michael and Tyler hunting for fossils in the Ulrich Quarry. We were a group of 7 with 4 adults and 3 kids (ages 7-13) and everyone LOVED the experience. Friendly, very well informed about the fossil fish species and other fossilized organisms, and happy to let us follow our noses and go at our own pace. I highly recommend Ulrich's for a dig-on-you-own experience.

This was one of the highlights of our trip to Utah. We drove up to Montana for the day to see Fossil Butte, and stopped at Ulrich’s on the way. If you are a science person, particularly geology and paleontology or any of the natural sciences, you’ll be amazed at what’s in front of you… 52 million year old fossils you can touch. It was snowing when we visited, so I’d like to go back in the summer and do the archaeological dig Ulrich’s offers.

Not much to see here.. Place looks almost broken down? Walking ramp was all broken down & looked like it would fall apart if you tried to go up it to the gift shop. I think that's where the gift shop was? Anyways nobody was there to help answer a question? Just some cars parked outside with nobody around & no lights on inside or upstairs where the shop was. We got out & stretched out legs looked around & took a photo ? of a dinosaur ?fossil footprint. That was the Highlight of this place. I suggest going up the road to the Fossil Butte Visitor center. They actually have a Park Ranger there who works there & can answer any questions you may have & they have a souvenirs store ?. Maybe if I'm ever back in Wyoming I'll try again & see if this place has anyone working on duty here & what this place is all about. We came during business hours but it just looked abandoned with nobody moving around inside or upstairs or downstairs. They did have a handicap chair that can give you rides up & down the stairs to the shop if need be. Don't know if it works or if the place has power cause again it all looked dark inside & nobody in sight.

Different than any of the shoreline quarries. Extremely detailed fish from the high organic materials. Small guided groups which is super nice! The option to be shuttled to the quarry is also nice

Very high quality fossils for sale and viewing. Owner is very friendly and helpful. Prices range from $3 for broken pieces of fossils to several $1000 for a museum quality wall mounted fossil specimen. There are numerous $20-$90 mounted fossils and even do it yourself kits to prepare your own fossils. They are located just outside the entrance to Fossil By the National Monument and well worth the stop. Ulrich's also offers digging trips to their private quarry to hunt for your own fossils. These are listed on their website, as to timing, price and duration.

The gallery is awesome and the owner very helpful. Our guide however was more interested in throwing rocks at birds and playing with crickets than he was in helping us. He also kept urging us to leave. We will try another place next time.
