The Greater Birmingham Humane Society, founded in 1883, is the largest and oldest humane society in Alabama. Over the course of their history they have witnessed the changes in their community and yet have never left the original mission of Dr. Phillips "to promote the humane treatment of people and animals through education, advocacy and services." The organization is described as a great place to adopt cats or dogs, with helpful and kind staff. While one reviewer initially had an upsetting experience, they later realized the staff are doing their best to care for the many animals that come through. The Humane Society also provides excellent service, such as quickly responding to a kitten in need. Donors appreciate the kind and grateful staff, and the ability to donate supplies like sheets, towels, and dog beds. Adopters are thrilled with their "precious fur babies" from the Humane Society.
