About Russell Cave National Monument

Russell Cave National Monument offers a short, easy walk to the cave on a pleasant raised path, though the cave itself is currently closed off from entry. The main visitor center is closed for renovation, but a small temporary visitor center is set up with interesting things to see and read, as many exhibits are in storage. Helpful rangers are available to provide information. Visitors can take a nature walk or a longer hiking trail, which is a 1.2 to 1.6 mile narrow asphalt path winding up the mountain through a hardwood forest with gorgeous greenery. The hike is considered a little strenuous or rather steep with the climb up, but it features benches strategically placed along the way and lots of birds. Informative signs are found along the paths. The archaeological history of the cave, used for shelter for thousands of years, is very interesting. It is a free place to stop while traveling, with a recommended Junior Ranger Program for kids. The site provides a quiet walk in nature.
