Not much to see just the opening of the cave. One side goes back 7 miles but you only can see into it from 50 feet away. The other looks like someone has been digging around in it

Short, easy walk to the cave. Free thing to see with kids when in the area. Visitor Center under Renovation. Did not visit the temporary Visitor Center. Beautiful drive to/from.

Love our NPS sites. Temporary visitor center. Ranger working it was awesome. Two rangers near the start of trail giving demonstrations were awkward. 0.2 mile boardwalk trail to cave mouth. Can’t go in cave. 1.6 mile nature trail. I wouldn’t go out of your way just to see this. Make it part of another trip

Nice little nature walk, and the cave is pretty cool. But, besides that, not to much there

I was disappointed with what we could see. Drove over an hour to get there thinking we could go into the cave, but no!! The boardwalk ends about 20 ft from the entrance, and you could barely see inside. The following is taken from the NPS website:Russell Cave is an archeological site with one of the most complete records of prehistoric cultures in the Southeast. In the 1950s, archeologists uncovered a large quantity of artifacts representing over 10,000 years of use in a single place. The cave has yielded projectile points, fishhooks (7500 to 5000 BC and 3500 to 500 BC), basketry (7500 to 5000 BC), and ceramics (7500 BC to 1540 AD). Pottery shards date from the earliest ceramic pieces to those of the early 19th century, and some of the fishhooks are of a type not seen anywhere else.

We were so close to the cave so we thought we would stop by. I wanted to get my cancellation stamp from the office and talk a bit about the history. Unfortunately, Covid requirements had changed and we did not have masks with us. But the Park Ranger allowed me to stamp my book and we left the building. We hiked toward the cave. The hike is a pleasant walk on a raised path. I would imagine it could be wheelchair accessible. The cave is closed off but you can see where they are in the process of exploring the cave floor. They have large sifting devices there to find the small particles that might be missed. It was a quiet walk and empty of all people. It was just us and nature. Perfect Saturday morning!

I enjoyed this small park as it has a lot of history that dates back way before recorded time! Definitely worth stopping and spending an hour or so! You definitely feel the temperature change while in the cave!

While it's not a huge park it's definitely worth a visit. Much better for a quick stop to stretch your legs or have a picnic than an interstate rest area. The history of the area tells the story of the people that have called this area home for more than 10,000 years.

This small park monument is off the beaten path in Stevens,Al. The park is free to visit with a nature center walking paths around the park with points of interest. The cave is the most important point of view. A lot of history is here and very interesting a great outing with families this is one I highly recommend.

Well worth the trip. Cave walk trail is rather easy while nature trail is a bit more involved. Either way the vista's and history are amazing

Nice place to stop in for a short visit! They have a bark program if you bring your dog they can complete for a bark ranger tag to go on their collar! Walk to cave is short and easy! If you do the hiking trail be prepared for a straight uphill climp to the top of the mountain! I would not reccomend for young kids or the elderly!

I got here late in the afternoon with about an hour before they closed. I managed to do the junior range program and got a metal badge. After the test I did the tour and watched the 7 minute movie about Russell cave. You cannot go into the cave anymore like you could about 10 years ago.

Good stop. Took a detour through here after visiting unclaimed baggage, its also a good quick stop if your heading to ruby falls. Really cool cave, nice boardwalk path, good for a nice 30-50 minute stop to view and stretch your legs. Nice museum and park rangers are very helpful.

Staff is adorable with their obvious and genuine love for the land and the creatures that live there. They were very excited to talk, listen, and teach my kids about anything and everything they saw! It was one of my favorite spots because I could actually READ all of the information while they entertained my children and I didn't feel any guilt or that my children were bothering them. Great easy paths for everyone. Very clean! Great museum! All in all well worth the stop. Pictures do NOT do it justice!!!

We really enjoyed our visit to the National Monument at Russell Cave. We visited the cave shelter area and also did the 1.2 mi hike. Just FYI- the hike is not a flat pass. It can be considered strenuous with lots of uphill and switchbacks. Bring hydration/water especially in the humid Alabama hot summer. We came prepared with water and hiking boots and allowed for time to stop and rest. It is very shaded and a good paved trail but don't want anyone caught unaware. Great for nature lovers! We also participated in the BARK Ranger program and applaud the NPS for their upstanding work and education!
