About St. Michael the Archangel Orthodox Cathedral
The Cathedral of St. Michael the Archangel was constructed between 1844 and 1848, designed by St. Innocent Veniaminov and built by skilled Finnish carpenters. The Cathedral is the principal physical representation of Russian cultural influence in 19th-century North America, serving as the See of the Russian Orthodox Diocese that governed the region. The present Cathedral is a reconstruction of the original building, which burned down.
Visitors describe the Cathedral as a "beautiful and moving historical location" with "interesting relics and paintings." It is a "Russian Orthodox church built in the 1840s" with an "amazing history and incredible story of recovery." Situated in the heart of downtown Sitka, the Cathedral is a free and worthwhile stop for anyone visiting the area.

This is a spectacular old church that sits smack bang in the middle of one of their main streets. Sure can't miss it! A monument in part to the former Russian occupancy of this area, the cathedral is an architectural testament to Russian orthodoxy. It is still in use and yet is welcoming to all. Quite a place!
