They added more pumps last year, which dramatically reduced the lines. Also, they increased operating hours. 👍

I had a disappointing experience at the Costco gas station at East Hills, Today [Feb 26, 2025]. An employee rudely told me to turn off my phone, claiming it was not allowed at the gas station. I understand that safety is important, but there are no actual laws in Canada that ban phone use at gas stations—only general safety recommendations. If Costco has a strict policy against it, there should be clear signage instead of employees enforcing unwritten rules in an unprofessional manner.
Additionally, I want to address the concern of static electricity, which is often misunderstood when it comes to fueling stations. Static electricity can ignite gas vapors, but mobile phones are not a significant source of static discharge. The real risk comes from people getting in and out of their vehicles while fueling. This motion can generate static electricity, which, if not discharged before touching the fuel nozzle, could create a spark. That’s why touching a metal surface, like the car door or the fuel pump, before handling the nozzle is recommended to dissipate any charge.
When it comes to mobile phones, the idea that they can cause a gas station explosion is largely a myth. There has never been a documented case of a phone igniting gas vapors at a fueling station. Modern phones do not produce a strong enough spark to ignite fuel, and their electrical components are enclosed, preventing exposure to flammable vapors. If phone use were a real danger, oil companies and regulatory bodies would have banned them outright, rather than just posting precautionary warnings.
Now, coming to the attitude of the employee—I was genuinely shocked by the level of rudeness. Just because of his poor attitude, my entire morning was ruined. I truly understand that as people age, their mental processing speed can slow down, which may impact their ability to regulate emotions, maintain patience, or react positively in social interactions. Studies in psychology show that cognitive aging can sometimes lead to increased irritability, a lower tolerance for unexpected changes, and difficulty adapting to new social norms.
Additionally, aging can bring about a decline in dopamine levels, which is linked to motivation and positive mood regulation. This can result in lower adrenaline rushes, meaning that some individuals may struggle to respond to situations with enthusiasm or patience. Cognitive rigidity, which refers to a resistance to changing perspectives, can also become more pronounced, leading some seniors to be overly strict or defensive about rules—even if those rules are unclear or outdated.
However, aging is not an excuse for rudeness, especially in a customer-facing role. With proper training and emotional intelligence development, employees—regardless of age—should be able to maintain professionalism and respect when communicating with customers. Costco should ensure that all employees, especially those in service roles, receive appropriate training in empathy, de-escalation techniques, and positive customer engagement.
I would also suggest that people whose mood depends on how they perceive customers' actions should never be working in a customer service role. If an employee is easily irritated, takes things personally, or cannot maintain a professional attitude, they should not be in a position that requires interacting with the public. Customers deserve to be treated with respect, and a simple policy reminder could have been communicated politely instead of rudely.
If Costco truly values customer experience, it should focus not only on safety but also on how its employees treat people. I expect better from Costco and hope they address both customer service standards and proper communication training for their staff.
