For Canadians trying to avoid buying American products, this Safeway’s produce section is terribly misleading. Frequently and consistently, the origin of items is carelessly and erroneously mislabeled.
In addition to that, more often than not, the produce section is out of stock of common items.

Never has any produce, half of the produce is moldy. Also has increased the price by a lot in the last few months alone.

Today I went shopping and picked up a loaf of bread priced at $4.79. To get rid of the coins in my pocket, I decided to pay with change. When I placed the bread on the conveyor belt, I started counting the coins. Even though the cashier saw me put the coins on the belt, she pressed the button to move it forward, and the coins fell between the conveyor and the register. I picked them up again and recounted them. I gave the cashier $5 in coins, thinking that with tax it would come to around $5 — but it turned out there was no tax.
The cashier counted the coins several times but couldn’t add them up correctly. I told her I was in a hurry, but she angrily kept recounting. After several attempts, she gave me back 10 cents. I objected, saying that I should be given the remaining 20 cents, but she refused.
The amount of the missing change wasn’t the main issue — I was truly upset and frustrated by the cashier’s behavior. I asked for the manager to come and check the camera footage to see that I had handed over the coins while counting them, and that the cashier simply couldn’t manage to count and total the payment properly, delaying customers in the process.
In the end, the manager admitted the mistake and apologized, but the time I lost couldn’t be returned. If you visit this place, be sure to count your cash change, because the employees lack the skills and ability to properly handle the register.
