I was picking up my mom from the lab and thought I would shop for my dog while she was there and before I could even step in the store a rude man with a white beard yelled at me to not park in their spot so they definitely lost my business as I will not be treated like that and maybe he could have asked me before assuming I was using their parking. It’s all over priced with awful staff so don’t waste your time

This is our number one go to spot for our Pupers everything!
From dry food to raw Bison, knuckles, treats and toys, they have everything we ever needed and have never had to shop elsewhere.
The staff is always eager to help, friendly, kind, knowledgeable and always assist me with enthusiasm and a smile!
I love this store tucked away but very accessible and wouldn’t choose the shop anywhere else.
I can attest that the healthy, truly tailored for dog products they sell are what have kept Our Puppers healthy, happy and with a shiny coat, caring from the inside out has been such a huge blessing!
I am ever so grateful. ?

When you walk into a pet store, you don’t assume that there is going to be an agenda that is being pushed. I understand now that your store has a very specific nutritional philosophy and that you see it as very black and white. This store promotes a high meat and high protein diet for all dogs, with certain ingredients deemed “unhealthy” and apparently assumed to be in any food not carried by them. This is fine, that’s your prerogative. This issue is in how you treat people needing something that is not within your belief system.
My dog has a congenital portoazygous portosystemic liver shunt. As a result, she is on a highly restrictive and protein limited diet, designed for her by a veterinary nutritionist at the University of Saskatchewan. The reason the diet for liver shunt dogs has to be low meat and restricted protein is very simple - her body is unable to filter ammonia. Ammonia is produced in a couple of ways in the body, but one of them is by eating foods high in glutamine, as gastrointestinal enterocytes metabolize glutamine to produce ammonia in the digestive process. If my dog consumes foods high in glutamine, ammonia will build up in her body, causing her to develop hepatic encephalopathy, which leads to various symptoms including, but not limited to, seizures and death. One of the foods highest in glutamine is meat. Meat is toxic to my dog because of her medical condition. My dog does not eat vegetarian treats for moral reasons or due to personal beliefs, but because of the pathophysiology of her congenital disease (ie. she was born with this due to genetic reasons - nothing I did or fed her caused this).
There are very few treats my puppy can eat other than the variety of fruits and vegetables that she already gets daily, in addition of course to her home cooked prescription diet. One of them are the vegetarian treats made by “Bright Planet”. She can have up to 3 of these treats per day within her allotted protein grams before her medications would have to be adjusted.
This store actually does carry some of the other brands that my dog is allowed to eat, namely Fruitables and Crumps. Upon seeing those, I began looking for the “Bright Planet” treats.
A store employee with glasses and a beard approached me while I was looking. I had forgotten the brand name but told him I was looking for vegetarian treats. He immediately told me that they don’t carry vegetable-based treats because they all contain sulphites. Having already seen the fruitables and Crumps, I thought it might be a good idea to look anyways, but this man followed me around explaining that such a treat would not be approved because they are unhealthy.
I don’t care what you do or do not choose to stock in your store. However, having been informed that this type of treat is necessary for a medical condition, the polite way to assist would have been to say something like “Hmm I don’t think I’ve seen anything like that due to our focus on high protein/real meat but you are welcome to look around. The dog
treats are here and here”.
Ironically today was the first time in the
three years of her life where I have been to a pet store without buying her a toy so had I been allowed browse, I probably would have left with a dog toy, a treat for my healthy dog, and probably a bag of fruitables for my liver shunt dog.
But instead I was made to feel guilty for my “choice” of dog treat, lectured about sulphites and ushered out. When I pointed out the irony of the crumps and the fruitables situation, I was told by the employee that he doesn’t agree with many of the choices made by the store, but again, something like what I was looking for would never get approved.
If your dog has dietary requirements other than high protein due to a medical condition, I would avoid this place. Tail Blazers clearly values their nutrition agenda more than making a sale and more than respecting a veterinarian prescri
