Chinle is the access point to Canyon de Chelly National Monument on Indian Reservation Hwy 7. There are some modern hotels in town for tourists. We decided to visit the monument, hoping to find a shady picnic ground, but we stopped first at the Visitor Center to freshen up. The facilities were ADA compliant and very clean and the Visitor’s Center was inviting looking. Somehow, we got misdirected and ended up in the Heritage area for the Navajo people, near Thunderbird Lodge. We left quickly, realizing that we were not where we should have been. Our experience was nothing like what we have enjoyed at any other National Monument we have ever visited.Restrooms: In the visitor Center, the restrooms are reached by an outside entrance. They are ADA compliant and were very clean.Picnic area: Somehow we ended up at the Picnic Area near Thunderbird Lodge. The parking area open, but for some reason the main picnic area under the cottonwoods was gated off.

Be sure to book a Navajo guide, wonderful landscape, old legends, tricky situation today: the valley has been handed over into Navajo hands, but the bosses are not financing the road construction. Therefore: dress warmly and be prepared for a rough tour. Then it's great fun.

We are so glad we stopped to check out this area, it’s very close to I 40 so don’t drive by. We will be back to camp and explore this area more in the spring.

Ive never seen a monument so littered with trash. Even saw a dead puppy at one of the overlooks. Really sad, its a beautiful spot with a sad history.

It was amazing!!! I clicked on the area on the map and there it was! Canyon de Chelly!!! How exhilarating to experience every click as I gazed over every photo of other people's experiences of actually being there!! Watching from behind my keyboard and screen I began to dream of one day being completely disconnected from the mind numbing tools and programming resources the system has given us to deter us from our true purpose.
