This hike is beautiful. If you are hiking from the east side, it is a little over 3 miles to the top. It is a climb up.... but nothing too crazy. Wonderful views and several stream crossings. If you go over the divide to the west trail head, it will add about 1.75 additional miles to your outbound trek. It is a steep climb from the west back to the top.

Wonderful USFS campground with a short nature trail and a long trail through the Dragoon Mountains. No drinking water available. Not recommended for low-clearance vehicles or trailers, because the unpaved entry road fords a creek (three times) and the fords have been eroded into deep dips.

Awesome! Amazing place to hold out against the people that just fought a war to free the slaves, now come to steal the Native Americans land. Very strange memento. Beautiful canyon with amazing wildlife.

It was very nice federal recreation area but when tried to locate the actual stronghold could not find it in the over grown brush and there was no marker. Had private residences that made it difficult to try to find markers without trespassing.

10 mile round trip hike to the road on the west side and back to campground on eastside. The trail to the top was in good condition with several stream crossings. The trail from summit to the west was overgrown with grass and weeds in places but passable. Nice views of several rock formations along the trail.Restrooms: Stinky pit toilets.Picnic area: Tables in the shade.

Well kept campgrounds and some amazing scenery. Great place to start your adventures and the road wasn’t too bad at all.

Very pretty. “Closed for the season”. Don’t know what that meant but we hiked around and found the plant identification trail. That was great. The road is rough. Not for RVs or very low cars. You will cross several “creeks”. It had rained the 3 days prior so there was some water in them. Saw a few deer. I can understand how Cochise could keep people safe there. Crazy terrain. TAKE LOTS OF WATER on the hike. If you have dogs, on leash should be observed.

Must have very small camper; if staying in a cabin might be ok. Roads dirt/rough very narrow. If just going to walk the short 200 ft trail there's not much to see. For us this certainly wasn't worth the hassle and time getting there.

This is a review for the Cochise trail that starts from the campground parking lot. The campgrounds in this area btw look very nice.At just over 6 miles r/t to the saddle this is a super nice hike with about 1K' gain. A bit rocky in places, boots are highly recommended. The first creek that turns right for about 1/2 mile has sporadic water. The Stronghold got buzzed 4X by a C-130 which was a treat if you like military stuff. We've been traveling the US for over 3 years now focused on hiking, blog link in bio. This trail ranks near the top. Nice views, incredible history, good tread, not too steep.
