as I opened the door
with a flick and a flap.
And inside that bright office
so cool, so serene,
stood Hunter
the sharpest young agent I’ve seen!
With a grin like a sunrise
all golden and wide,
he waved me on in
with a hop to his stride.
He said, “Let’s get you covered,”
and the papers went swish,
and my worries normally
ornery as fish
sat quietly down
like good guests on a chair,
once Hunter began
with his kind, steady air.
He explained every plan
with a warm gentle flow,
like a river that hums
where the calm breezes blow.
He spoke in a rhythm
a tap and a beat
like the pat-patter steps
of two soft-shuffling feet.
And the choices he showed me
stood tall in a row,
like guardians guarding
the car that I tow.
My Swede sedan almost sparkled,
imagining the care
as if whispering, “Finally!
Somebody’s fair!”
The whole scene was a puzzle
both old-time and new:
a handshake from yesterday,
screens bright with hue.
A curious pairing,
but somehow just right
like a clock wearing sneakers
and running with light.
He repeated the key things
in twos and in threes,
till they felt like warm echoes
that drifted with ease.
And each time he circled
back ’round once again,
I understood better
than I ever had then.
When he placed my new policy
safe in my palm,
the room gave a sigh
a soft, settling calm.
And the sun outside shimmered,
not harsh as before,
as if knowing I’d walk
a bit brighter out the door.
And my car in the lot
gave a small happy vroom,
like a creature relieved
that its future had room
for smooth desert highways
and cool starlit nights
with a blanket of safety
to soften the frights.
Oh Hunter, oh Hunter
you marvelous man!
You helped me more kindly
than anyone can.
