Tom's Thumb Trailhead offers a beautiful and challenging hiking experience in the Scottsdale area. The trailhead features a large parking lot, providing ample access for visitors. McDowell Sonoran Preserve is gorgeous. Steady climb, well-marked trail. That giant granite thumb at the top is wild up close. Saw a couple mule deer on the way down. Great views of Four Peaks. Bring more water than you think.

Great trail. The first 3/4 the way up is difficult with steep switchbacks. Advice is have is take the Lookout trail as you leave the top of the thumb. Its a short trail offering a beautiful view of the preserve. Great place to sit up top if you're seeking solitude.

Been in PHX a dozen years and never made it around McDowell range to this trailhead before. I can't wait to go back!
