For over a century, the halls of Maynards Auctioneers Liquidators & Appraisers have been witness to the changing tides of taste in Vancouver elite. Specializing in fine art, estate jewelry, and antiques of the highest pedigree, Maynard’s deals in the type of objects that might feel at home in the classiest West Van homes. However, amidst the Drexel Heritage and Cavelty diamond tennis bracelet, one can also find the occasional iPad or knockoff 1800 century Ming replica.Events are held on a monthly basis, providing regular opportunities for aficionados and amateurs to survey the offerings and place bids. While the more casual browser can get a bird's-eye view of the goods by showing up on auction day. Serious collectors would be wise check the website for preview dates and times. I cannot stress enough the importance of due diligence.Past auctions have featured selections from the likes of William Switzer and Baker Furniture, as well as mid-century modern pieces from Balinese teak to rosewood hutches. The house also deals extensively in Canadian and contemporary art, alongside Northwest Coast and Inuit works including masks, baskets, carvings and the like. Woven throughout this rarified assortment of antiquities and artworks, one occasionally encounters objects of more dubious provenance -think used Ipads, prints, and some reproductions. As a prospective buyer, I attended two auctions in the past, though walked away empty-handed on both occasions, finding the winning bids to be unreasonable. Based on my personal experience, I have found more affordable opportunities in houses of Montreal and Toronto. When considering Maynard’s from the SELLER’S PRESPECTIVE, there is indeed an appeal to sell at this house that generally gets higher prices. However, after attempting to arrange a preliminary appraisal of my own silver champagne bucket via their website and subsequent emails, I lamented their apparent lack of follow through. Further my research uncovered mixed reviews from former clients - some praised the auction house's professionalism and efficiency, while others criticized a lack of communication and customer service. It seems smaller consignments like mine may fall through the cracks of an operation focused on larger collections. While I would like to see my possession featured with this prestigious auction house, I would hesitate to recommend Maynard’s for sellers like myself.

They happily sell damaged items without noting the condition in their catalogue. The photographs, of course, are deceptive—taken to avoid showing the true condition of the pieces. Buy at your own risk; they are shady and self-serving.

Absolutely terrible. They ran an auction on 07/12/23 which closed at 9am PST. Winners received a confirmation email for all lots secured during the bidding. Then, they reopened the same auction around 2pm to solicit higher bids, without giving reasonable notice to the prior winners. Finally, they refused to honor the first auction results. Although this case will likely result in legal action, be cautious about either consigning or bidding with Maynards.

Terrible job of running their most recent auction.Unilaterally reopening closed lots, after the hammer dropped, to allow latecomers to outbid those told they had won the lot and bidding was closed. No attempt to contact bidders impacted by this, who lose lots due to the error of the auctioneers who bowed to a late arriving bag o cash, so it seems. Unethical and wholly improper. Avoid this place in future, they cannot be trusted.

Appraisals done very professionally with full explanations of process of auction etiquette. Receipt of all items consigned given. Staff very pleasant and helpful. Items displayed well prior to auction allowing enough room to see all angles. I was very happy to deal with this company and would do so again without hesitation.

This is a nightmare business to deal with. I will share 2 incidents with you.I once bought a like new Rolex 2 tone Datejust from them. But one of their employee used a metal wire tag to attach the lot details to the watch. As a result the watch was severely scratched and damaged. When she removed the tag after I paid for it, I then realized all of the deep scratches from the metal wire. Of course they don't care.I decided to give them another chance, then another really bad incident happed. Without my consent, they sold my genuine antique chest of drawers with very interesting documented history for peanuts. They even dared to sell it well below the initial price estimates. I would have preferred to donate these for a good cause, instead. Therefore, I lost a lot of money and confidence in them. They will not handle my other finer antiques/art work, nor will I ever endorse them.

My husband and I recently went into Maynards to discuss selling items from my mothers estate. The older woman behind the desk was so upbeat and informative and gave us so many options on how to move forward with our antiques and artwork. Thank you for your in-depth help Shannia. My peers and I will definitely bring our parents priceless collections as we have seen your outstanding facility and are confident you will handle our treasures with care.

Maynard’s have just cost me AU $489. I purchased two lots from Maynard’s only to discover the items were fake. I notified Maynard’s of the issue and questioned why the items being sold were not authenticated prior to selling. Now, I understand that this can happen and Libby was quick in offering a refund on the items, but not on the shipping or lost fees as a result of this error on their part. The result was I lost on the shipping costs both ways and the fees relating to the international transfer. A net loss of AU $489. I believe in this instance I should have been refunded the shipping costs because the items were sold as genuine and could not be proven as such. This is a case of poor performance on behalf of Maynard’s and poor policy decisions when an item is returned and the issue is not the customers fault.

I've bought items through their auctions and it's a fun experience - remember though that they add a 22% premium on top of your winning bid price, so factor that into your bid. Also, it's important to view items you're interested in person before bidding - the condition of an item usually isn't fully described online, so buyer beware. The staff have been very helpful with answering questions.

Over the years I have have bought all sorts of furniture, art, jewellery, rugs you name it I bought it. As far as I am concerned I got a great deal on whatever I won at the auction. No issues whatsoever. If you are bidding on an item I suggest you look at in person and then place your bid if it suits your fancy. Photos are not the same as looking at an item in person. That is true no matter if it is an auction, a hotel or some vacation destination, photos are only 1/2 the story both good and bad ..
