“Incredible selection of toys. Exceptional service. Merilyn went above and beyond to help us. Sales associates like her are the reason we go to real stores instead of shopping online.”

“In the world of online book sales, it is wonderful to still have the opportunity to browse books and attend events at Book Passages! I make it over from the East Bay as often as I can.”

“Step into the enchanting world of Kinokuniya bookstore, nestled within the bustling Japan Center mall at Japantown, San Francisco. From the moment you enter, you're greeted by a vibrant atmosphere that's as inviting as it is exciting. The first floor is a paradise for anime and manga enthusiasts, boasting an extensive collection of Japanese and English manga, art books, and anime merchandise. And don't miss the illustration by the renowned Japanese artist, Katsuya Terada, adorning the entrance. It's a testament to the store's commitment to celebrating Japanese culture and artistry, with a touch of magic added by Terada's live painting during his visit in 2013. Venturing up to the second floor, you'll discover a haven for book lovers of all kinds. Here, you'll find a diverse selection of general English and Japanese books, magazines, and gift items. Whether you're searching for a new novel to lose yourself in, a magazine to spark your curiosity, or the perfect gift for a loved one, Kinokuniya has you covered. What truly sets this bookstore apart is the variety of offerings from Japan. From literature to lifestyle, stationery to snacks, there's something to captivate every interest and taste. I often find myself getting lost in the aisles, marveling at the array of titles and treasures waiting to be discovered. But it's not just the impressive selection that keeps me coming back--it's the staff. Knowledgeable and friendly, they are always willing to offer a recommendation or answer any questions you may have. Whether you're a devoted manga fan, a curious reader, or simply seeking a slice of Japanese charm, make sure to pay a visit to this delightful bookstore. You won't be disappointed!”

“I really like this Books Inc. Staff are very knowledgeable and helpful. I also appreciate that they are open somewhat early. I can buy a magazine or a book before my work day starts and still have time to grab coffee. Thank you Books Inc, glad you're still around!”

“Legendary store. Have always enjoyed every visit here. I always find good finds each visit from all the many options to choose from here. The staff is knowledgeable and friendly. I love the location as it is near a restaurant I adore, Max's Opera Cafe. Peet's shares the building and entrance so that is a nice perk. Buy a book, get a beverage, sit and enjoy both. There is a parking garage with Valet service in the building. Love the many live talks with authors.”

“The store is stocked to the brim with comics, novels, cookbooks, and various genres, all with reasonable prices! It is also run by the sweetest and most helpful store owner, Jiang Mama. She and the store makes the trek from South Bay to SF Chinatown worth it.”

“This is a very peaceful and unique book shop. The inside is very well organized and has every book sorted out by the different genres. They had various home items, valentines décor, cards, gift options, and souvenirs. The kid section was super cute and had different stuffed animals, toys, and books. The view is very pretty as you can see out towards the boats / yachts. We didn't interact with the lady working and she didn't say anything to us either. It was pretty busy and a lot of people were browsing.”

“The Cartoon Art Museum was a lovely addition to our touring schedule for our family, including our 16 year old, a self-proclaimed Comic Con geek. The museum fueled her curious nature. A quaint little off the beaten path respite from all energy of the Wharf, we loved the reading room, and the memorabilia was well displayed. Also, the local artists featured in several areas around the museum were extremely impressive. We felt very welcomed and enjoyed seeing the mentoring going on between curator and what appeared to be a new museum employee. Overall, it was a 5 star experience. Excellent quality.”

“Really friendly service! Great selection--and they can order any book I want and get it very quickly. (A particularly great selection of kids books, but I also get a lot of literary books here too.) Free parking out back. Just an all-around great independent bookstore!”

“Cozy bookstore in the middle of larkspur landing. They have a cute little fireplace with comfortable seating. They also have a vast sale section of books. I walked out with about 5 books! Such a nice store and great service.Plus, my cat LOVED the bag.”

“The has got to be the best independent bookstore in SF. It's tiny but, don't let their size fool you! I have eclectic tastes and I am able to 99.9 % of the books I need in the shop. On the rae occasion they don't have it they get it for me. Their staff is so knowledgeable, I have been able to describe a book and they figure out the puzzle. When I plan to travel, I like to read fiction that takes place in that country or town. They always provide me a selection of brilliant tomes. Whether your visiting, a tourist or, lifelong San Franciscan, you owe yourself a visit!”

“I spent so long in this store that I wanted to buy everything. It's like a toy store for adults with books, stationeries, souvenirs, and everything in between. They are colourful and quirky (some). They remind us there are beautiful things called art out there that are worth our longing.”

“Whoah, I was shocked by the collection at this little tiny bookstore. They sell used/donated books and the proceeds go to the local library. I've been to other bookstores that benefit local libraries, and normally the collection is so sad. I'm an avid fiction reader, and pretty picky, and in their fiction section they had tons of great books published in the last couple years that I have loved (for around $5 for most books) In the travel section I found a fairly recent guidebook for Montreal which will be awesome for our upcoming trip. My husband couldn't stop raving about the 4D? John Wick DVDs he found for cheap that he said would easily go for 10x the price on Amazon. We also found lots of cute books for our toddlers that were 2-3 dollars each. Overall, very small shop but some great finds!!”

“You simply MUST visit if you have any appreciation for the lost art of bookmaking or any interest in typography and the mechanics of printing. The machinery used here date back to some of the earliest printing processes and are still working. This place is a museum that still produces beautiful art books. The fine people working here are true artisans and are happy to share their work with you. Call ahead to be sure you can take the tour, or attend a show featuring their amazing artwork on display.”

“What a good reminder of this unsung bookstore across the street from the College of Marin. I wanted a book today for a birthday party tonight--nothing like waiting until the last second! Not only did they have that precise book, but wrapped it beautifully while I browsed the extensive card collection. And I had a fine discussion about recent books with the two individuals minding the store. I will go there first in the future--the "First" in the name of the store means more than just First St. where they got their start!”

“This is my favorite bookstore ever: even more than The Strand, than Shakespeare and Company, or St. Mark's (even when it was flourishing) and Revolution Books.”

“Copperfield's Books is an awesome store/chain. In these Amazon, instant-gratification-centric times, I love taking a slowed-down and more conscientious approach to buying books whenever possible. Yes, the prices will be higher than Amazon and other online retailers. If something is not in stock, you may have to wait for them to order it, but waiting and supporting a small local business feels worth it to me. Their employees have always been kind and helpful to me over the phone and in person. They have an excellent selection of books packed into their brick-and-mortar storefront, and on the rare occasion they don't have what I'm looking for, they're willing to order it. I've been particularly impressed with their graphic novel selection. I've had consistently good experiences here, at their Napa and Petaluma locations, too, so I've got to give them five out of five stars across the board.”

“As a San Francisco native, I usually try to avoid the wharf area in general but this place is worth schlepping across SF. They're situated at the end of the Hyde Street Pier, which is one of SF's National Parks. Yeah, parkS with an S! It's also part of the Maritime Museum/Aquatic Park area, so the views are GORGEOUS! As for the store, it's a bit smaller than the other souvenir shops, but I think that the product variety is much nicer. Most of the places along the wharf seem to have the same stuff I can get in Chinatown, but this place has like brass fog horns, fog globes (waaay cooler than snow globes) and lots of National Park and nautical/maritime themed stuff.”

“I have walked past this place many times and finally stopped by last week looking for a gift for an architect friend. The customer service reminded me of another time. I showed up around 5:30 and didn't even realize they were closing, because I was so welcomed. The girl there quickly got an idea of what my friend might like and lead me around the shop, expertly pulling and explaining different books, and helped me choose a truly special one that spoke to a few of my friend's interests. I ended up wanting to read some of them myself even though I don't know anything about architecture. I'll definitely be back!”

“Love the feeling of a little family here. The staff is very friendly and helpful and they have all the stationery one needs for college. This cute bookstore is located at the end of the main parking lot at College of Marin Kentfield. I found my books and these amazing erasable pens and erasable highlighter here. How cool is that? ??”
