“I came into the FedEx Office at Jefferson and Sepulveda in Culver City on September 15 around 5:00 p.m. to ship two packages, one to Las Vegas and one to San Diego.

The store was busy and the line was several people deep, but only one employee was actually working the shipping counter. He was excellent — patient, professional, knowledgeable, and calm even though he was clearly carrying the workload by himself.

What bothered me was watching another employee, an older bald gentleman with glasses, spend a long stretch across the store talking and laughing with a woman near the copy area while customers continued lining up. Even after she left, he still didn’t come over to help.

I eventually asked the employee helping me whether he normally had help. He made it clear that he was supposed to, but said he was trying not to let it bother him and was just focused on doing his job. That told me everything I needed to know about his professionalism.

I’m a director myself, and one thing I look for in employees is what they do when nobody appears to be watching. This young man kept helping customer after customer, answered all my questions, and even took extra care with my unusual shipment of live isopods.

He deserves recognition from management.

It was striking watching two employees in the same store, on the same shift, operating with completely different levels of awareness and responsibility.

Five stars for the gentleman who helped me. I hope management sees this and recognizes him — and I hope his coworker learns to look around and help when someone beside him is getting buried.”
