About Salk Institute for Biological Studies
The Salk Institute for Biological Studies has a long legacy of making critical scientific breakthroughs in fields ranging from cancer to stem cells to neuroscience to plant biology. The Institute provides brilliant scientific minds with access to cutting-edge technologies and a culture that encourages bold ideas and nurtures collaboration. Together, Salk scientists redefine how humanity understands itself and the world it calls home. They uncover foundational knowledge that can lead to unprecedented medical treatments, as well as strategies for preserving the planet. Salk's culture of innovation and collaboration creates an unparalleled environment where transformative scientific discoveries are made. The Salk Institute is an amazing example of Modernist architecture, with its hard edges, unembellished materials, and striking water feature in the middle of the courtyard. The architecture is particularly impressive, with its open-plan labs and private offices for researchers, all while maintaining a functional and flexible design. Visitors can enjoy a self-guided tour of the facility, though as of 2024, only docent-led tours will be available. The Institute is well worth a visit for any fan of architecture, especially modern architecture, with the nearby Geisel Library, another brutalist masterpiece, being an easy addition to the trip.

Great research institute, 5 stars. But the courtyard is fenced in and after hours you can't get in to see the sunset on the equinox, so minus 1 star. Why is the courtyard fenced in like Ft. Knox?

Right against the stunning scenery of La Jolla, it's not only a hub for top-notch research but also an architectural masterpiece.
