The Oakland YMCA is a facility with mixed reviews, offering both positive experiences and areas needing improvement. Many visitors appreciate the friendly front desk staff, describing them as nice, welcoming, and among the best they’ve encountered at various YMCAs. The cleanliness of the gym and the well-maintained equipment are also praised, reflecting good gym etiquette among members. The facility provides opportunities for social interaction, especially for multicultural and intergenerational groups, which many find enjoyable and stress-relieving. However, there are some notable concerns. Several reviews mention the loss of amenities like the hot tub, spa, and steam room, which have been closed or eliminated, disappointing long-term members. Membership cancellation is described as difficult, with issues in communication and billing, causing frustration. The locker room, especially the men’s locker room, is criticized for being shabby and poorly maintained, with broken fixtures and a non-functional steam room. The pool is considered decent but sometimes cloudy. One common complaint involves the facility’s closing policy. The posted hours suggest members can stay until 5:00 PM, but staff enforce an earlier cutoff, often rushing members and issuing veiled threats about staying past closing time. This creates an unpleasant experience around closing hours. Overall, the Oakland YMCA is an accessible and functional place, but it could benefit from better management, improved maintenance, and clearer policies to enhance member satisfaction.
I love this Y. The front desk staff are so nice and welcoming, especially the lady with the beautiful gray hair. The gym is always clean and the equipment is always put away; this means other gym goers know and follow gym etiquette.

Bring back the hot tub!!! I work in the trades and I would soak after working hard all day. It was the best part of my day. I miss the multicultural intergenerational interactions and the stress relief. I am going to switch to the Berkeley y for the hot tub now, but I’ll miss the Oakland Y A LOT!!!

Really nice white dude at the front desk (wish I got his name) but honestly overall it's among the best Y's I've been to (and I've been to a lot)
