“I won an auction for 3 Pilates reformer classes last year and I haven’t stopped going! I knew I had to start building strength for my health, but was having trouble motivating myself to go to the gym. Alison’s classes are fun and challenging. I can tell I’m so much stronger than I used to be.”

“It took my partner and me a while to get back into a gym routine, but I’m so glad we chose Body Mechanix. I initially felt overwhelmed—especially with weights and equipment we weren’t familiar with—but Minh made all the difference. He’s incredibly knowledgeable and does a great job breaking everything down step by step, which helped us build confidence, strength, and consistency.

The gym itself has a welcoming, supportive community and excellent trainers. I highly recommend Body Mechanix whether you’re brand new to the gym or more experienced—you’ll feel comfortable and supported either way.”

“Let the record show- I am not a huge review leaver. I LOVED MY WORKOUT CLASS AT THE COMBINE. If you are looking for a gym where you can trust to get a killer workout don’t look further. I did a 7AM Wednesday class and left feeling fitter and stronger. The dopamine rush was insaneeee. Alex had an amazing playlist, great vibes, and kept me working hard and smiling through a challenging and rewarding workout. Would recommend for athletes and beginners alike.”

“This is the best gym we have ever been to. The staff are friendly and always willing to help. They are conscientious about keeping everything clean and well ventilated.
Clients are considerate of others and take turns on the exercise machines. They have personal training as well. Love this place.”

“As a mom, I'm always a little nervous when my son trains somewhere new — especially while we're traveling. But from the first day my son walked into Bravo Zulu while we were visiting Oakland, that worry disappeared.

He's been doing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for years, so he's no beginner, but he came home that first night talking about how much sharper and more focused the coaching was compared to what he was used to. As the days went on, I watched him get more confident, not just on the mats, but in the way he carried himself.

What really stood out to me was how Coach Nick and the team welcomed him in immediately. As a new kid on the block visiting from another country, they treated my son like he'd been training there for years. The other teens and adults in his classes pushed him hard, but in a way that felt encouraging rather than intimidating, and he came out of every session a little more confident and a little more sure of himself.

As a parent, that's really what you hope for: a place that builds skill, sure, but also character. Bravo Zulu did both. We're so grateful for the time he spent there, and we'll be looking for an excuse to stop back in next time we're in Oakland.”

“Best gym ever. Best owners. Seriously, this is THE neighborhood gym to join! Very friendly atmosphere, no class times, 30 min whole-body workout. Trainer on site. Every day is a different workout and it's all planned out for you. No more than 9 people working out at any time. I've been a member for years and I can't imagine going anywhere else. TEN STARS!”

“Bliss has been a staple in my life since 2019, when I joined to add more movement, build strength, and de-stress. Before Bliss, I belonged to a larger gym chain that felt impersonal and intimidating. The people at Bliss work to provide an antithesis to stereotypical gyms; it’s a people-centered, supportive space that makes fitness welcoming and enjoyable!”

“I've been going to Ownit RX for almost 6 months now after not lifting for several years, and it has been fantastic so far. Fabien does a great job of programming challenging, but modifiable classes and always keeps the group entertained during classes. All of the classes have been relatively small, which means that it's been really easy to ask questions about how to do an exercise or get a form check.

Fabien has been a wealth of knowledge on exercises and has helped me set up a small rehab program for a hamstring injury that I picked up a few months ago. It got me healthy again so quickly.

I'm looking forward to seeing what progress I make over the next few months and also working out with all of my neighbors”

“Get Bent is my favorite gym in the East Bay! The coaches/owners Jason and Pela truly care about the community and your development as a lifter. They host the best events and have options for everyone including classes for beginners as well as private coaching for advanced powerlifters. Check it out!”

“I have such a great amount of respect for the place and community that Coaches Holly and Brian have built. Coach Paola also helps create an incredible space where people want to keep showing up for themselves and for their goals. The Resilient Strength is purposeful, inclusive, and responsive to the needs of the athletes that enter through the front door, whether they are trying to introduce themselves to the world of strength training, or if they are trying to take their game to the next level. I have trained here for a little less than a year, and my only regret is that I took so long to find this space. I consider myself an aspiring powerlifting competitor. It is deeply reassuring to have personal coaching that will align with my interests, and is actively helping me achieve the dreams and PRs that I want to reach. The amount of growth I have experienced as an athlete in such a short amount of time is beyond my expectations, and I am exceptionally grateful for the ride. Highly recommended.”

“I wanted to give this location such an incredible review. First, as a trans person, I felt quite welcomed by the community and the owner. I visited the gym and considered joining. However, with my work schedule and the class times available, the gym did not align with my schedule.

However, if they decide to incorporate a 9am class I will definitely consider joining! Thank you so much for the generosity and kindness!”

“I was invited to God’s Gym for leg day and immediately upon my arrival I meet Gary. Gary’s whole energy field was bright and uplifting and I knew that I was in great hands.
Picture this- a gym where it feels like the 1980’s in the best way. No pretense , no “ lifestyle branding” just you, your gymmates , and Gary pumping iron.
I felt like I was back in the gym with my dad when I was a kiddo. I loved being part of the camaraderie- everyone cheering you on to see you succeed and Gary counting your reps and motivating you to crush it.
Although it was only a half hour session I began to question what I was actually accomplishing at my home gym. At God’s gym people weren’t scrolling their phones- they were present and they were putting in the work.”

“Had my first class here at Barry's a few days ago. The staffers are informative and helpful, the space is clean and seemingly well-maintained; the class and the instructors were very clear with their coaching for the group class. The space felt very disorienting at first with low-light and loud sound, but once you get settled, it seems fine. My observation is around hygiene and cleanliness. During the class sessions, no one seems to be wiping down their equipments in between use, which seemed very gross especially during a sweat-inducing class. Perhaps there's more encouragement from the instructions to do so during the session?”

“UAF is the best gym!!! I have been consistently working out in Jon’s classes since 2020 and I have become so much stronger!

Jon is always changing up the workouts with new moves and a great mix of strength and cardio. I’ve also improved my mobility and recently started barbell classes. Sunday kickboxing is a highlight! Jon knows when to push me that extra bit so that I keep seeing consistent improvements!

UAF has a great community, excellent value for the monthly class pass, and a major bonus is that I can take classes online from home to fit into my work/personal schedule! Highly recommend!!”

“My favorite gym I've ever been to - equipment's always available, clean and good quality. It's strength training focused, sled, suspension trainers, multiple squat racks, the way a gym should be. The vibe is really friendly, everyone's local and a regular. Intimate, but you can still come in and do your thing with headphones on.”

“I’m long past due for a review (sorry for gatekeeping) but Flex is the greatest neighborhood gym you could hope for. Clean facilities, friendly staff, well maintained machines, and a gorgeous and cool studio that’s open for use when classes aren’t taking place. Clientele is friendly, only positive vibes. No creeps, no intimidating gym bros, just people enjoying the space together as they reach their health and wellness goals. Rarely too busy. I’m not a class person, but the classes seem fun and diverse. Truly a gem of a gym and I feel so lucky to have it in my neighborhood.”

“It's a community-oriented environment with equipment and old school vibes that you won't find at the corporate gyms. The gym is always clean, and I don't have to worry about people resting on equipment while on a phone. It's a gym for beginners and bodybuilders alike.”

“Michael Smartt is beyond great. I worked with him before the pandemic, and started again when BFF moved to the new location, which I love (it's small enough and big enough, with easy parking). Michael knows so much about the body, can chase down any injury, prevents others; he's helped me prep for big back packing trips; stay healthy and strong for every day life, and even given me exercises that have helped my migraines. He puts together a well-rounded, smart workout-- I always recommend BFF to everyone I know.”

“I've been around many Muay Thai and boxing gyms in the Bay Area and if you're into getting individual attention and a coach that will really challenge you then CMT is the gym for you! There are beginner friendly classes as well as competitive classes so this is a good gym for all levels.”
