Just had a remarkably excellent experience at the DMV. I didn't have an appointment so joined the queue online and was called the window exactly at the promised time. Sadly we were really almost too late for my daughter to take her permit test but the people working there were really so wonderful and made the experience super positive. I love SF, so many random delightful surprises every day. Definitely a review I never would have expected to write!!

Most of the staff are quite rude, apathetic and condescending. The set-up is very confusing and they mock people who don't understand where to go next in the maze of a process. I witnessed a man say he doesn't speak English and needed Mandarin translation -- the security guard just stared at him and didn't help him. A staffer doing VIN verification was extremely snobby, turning his backside to each resident and saying "as I told you three times" like a schoolteacher to another resident who was a non-native speaker. Probably several concerning policy violations here. Only a couple helpful staffers in the mix. As a native English speaker I was treated okay but was distressed by how badly others were treated. I noticed that anyone who didn't speak English well was treated so poorly. Terrible customer service and very unfriendly people. This reflects really badly on the city and the California DMV. I've had far superior DMV experiences in other states. This SF location is an embarrassment to the state of California.

I called to ask the computer if my License was mailed out. Computer did not hear me or reply to my questions. I don’t like a stupid computer. Does anyone know how to reach a “ real person “ at DMV in SF?

Great user experienceThe personnel was really nice, respectful and helpful the two times I've visited the dmv.I went in and out really quickly. I recommend making an appointment online in advance.

Arrived at 9:05 (plenty of parking!) for a 9:10 appointment to release a lien on my title. Checked in, called to a window 8 minutes later (yes I timed it out of morbid curiosity). Handed in my paperwork, made a few small fixes at the instruction of the attendant I was working with. All taken care of in under 10 minutes. I was driving out of the DMV lot by 9:20, 15 minutes after checking in and 10 minutes after my scheduled appointment. No issues whatever. Definitely recommend folks making an appointment, and I imagine parking might get challenging later in the day (lot was already 3/4 full when I arrived ~9 AM). But overall I had a very smooth and easy experience.

I googled the address of this place because the picture of the building is now used in advertising in the footer of most of the major news sites. It's used for ads such as "seniors can lower their car insurance etc".After reading the reviews, what on earth is going on here? In Florida, our DMVs are located in strip malls-- well, most of them. They're small and inviting. Many don't have waits. The Florida DMV is also known as a tax office as you can do other things there as well. Most often than not, you can get in and out in less than 30 minutes. Sometimes, there's no wait at all. I've never dealt with an angry employee either and there's no driving test for people moving to Florida.I don't know what's going on out there, or in this DMV, but if I had to deal with it, I'd move --- anywhere, or to any state. That place looks horrifying.

The WORST! It was HORRIBLE! Like you were asking for a favor or to borrow money! Both of the guys that assisted me; the first one in window 5; around 4 pm WAS ANNOYED by his last costumer and took it out on me! The second guy; a Cuban was SO RUDE like he was about to punish me because I did something wrong!!! I hate it! It’s so sad because I NEED to go; but if it was not a need; I WOULD DO IT!

If you like waiting in line, this is the place for you. Once you've waited in one line, don't worry, there will be more lines. There are buttons to press to let them know you're waiting. I wonder if the buzzer really alerts anyone inside the building to let them know I and others have been waiting???

useless point of bureaucracy; everywhere asking for going digital, here you need a proof of residency being printed, no matter if your lease agreement is digital; such policy in place provoking psychosis, no wonder why the streets are like that

What a terrible experience. I tried to make it easy. I had an appointment, I took my test and paid ahead of time but it was still most unpleasant. Hard to navigate, no clear indication where to go, etc. The staff was surly, rude and unkempt. Is it against a state employees code of ethics to wash their hair and wear clean clothes? I know this can't be the most stress-free place of employment, but good God. Try a little kindness. Very upset that the people there who didn't have English as their first language were treated so shabbily. Everyone deserves to be treated with the respect and dignity.

I went at 4pm on Tuesday and was in and out in 11 minutes without an appointment. I’m still in shock that it was so fast. The person at check in says it gets slower around 4pm so I recommend trying then if you don’t have an appointment.
