“I was befuddled when, on top of the $180 labor rate and total $424 repair cost, the first screen of the credit card terminal asked us to add a 10%, 15%, or 20% tip. The shop owner had pushed the signing terminal toward my daughter, even though he had just seen me hand him my card. Like anyone would do, I asked AI, finding that it’s actually not customary to tip mechanics, even in California, but if they go above and beyond, by all means. I won’t share the exact wording, but Google Gemini was very empathetic about the angst tip confusion causes a lot of people these days. When I explained the misunderstanding the next day by phone, the shop owners went out of their way to offer a solution. Again, I should have just gotten over my tip guilt and asked to re-start the transaction at the time it occurred.
Pricing for the repair itself was generally appropriate/maybe high average based on online queries for California rates. Adding a 15% tip, of course, pushed the total. While I understand the credit card terminal is standard software, I suspect the shop owner could configure tip amounts, etc. As is, I did think the process put too much pressure on customers to tip, and I have no information about how tips at a family owned auto shop might be distributed.”
