“I love GOAT Santa Cruz. A huge variation of workouts, from truly challenging stuff, all the way to silver sneakers classes. I take the silver sneakers cuz I have a back injury. Someday I hope to add a few more classes. Excellent staff, friendly and really knowledgeable.”

“If you’re searching for your new gym — this is IT. Was here from out of town for a few days looking for a smaller gym to pop into to get my workout(s) done — I typically strength train independently, but was trying to avoid the larger companies i.e. 24hr fitness, OTF etc. I prefer more intimate fitness communities. Called and spoke with Pascual, extremely helpful and friendly from the start. We discussed my fitness level and he gave me a few options for his smaller training classes the next day. The members of the gym were some of the friendliest and most welcoming I’ve encountered. All ages and fitness levels. Awesome variety of workout equipment clearly very well taken care of. We did rotating circuits, but there was plenty of equipment for everyone to snag their appropriate weight. I felt challenged throughout the entire workout, but not in a way that was compromising my form. I also appreciated that he stuck to the larger, more compound movements. I feel a lot of high intensity strength training classes frequently focus on endurance over quality of movement — not at Torkc. Following the class Pascual followed up to ensure I had a great workout and proceeded to offer workout options for the following day; the option to train independently using my own program or one created by himself. I’ll reiterate, this gym is one of the friendliest and most welcoming I’ve encountered, with awesome equipment on top of that. Pascual clearly cares about all of his clients and wants them to achieve their goals. Whether you’re just starting out or looking to take your athleticism to the next level Torkc and Pascual are your answer! Thank you for having me!”

“The TXT (Toadal Cross Training) program is excellent! It's an extra cost but well worth it. Classes are open to TXT members at all Toadal Fitness locations. The programming is well thought out to safely and effectively work all muscles. It's a small group format so the trainers can show you the moves and provide helpful advice to get the most out of your workouts. Everyone is so supportive and I've never felt out of place even though as a "senior" I hardly fit the demographic. All shapes, sizes and abilities are welcome. The class format includes a warm up focusing on the muscle group that is worked in the "strength" section to follow. There's a big range of kettlebell weights available. Then there is a workout of the day with a variety of toys such as well balls, slam balls, jump ropes, TRX straps, rowers, etc. They keep it fresh so it's never boring. Additionally, there's monthly challenges to strengthen muscle groups such as abs, arms, glutes, etc. You can try it for free for a week to see it it's right for you and then it's just a month to month commitment with the option to pause if you know work, vacations, or a busy schedule is going to interfere with your routine.”

“Dedicating my 2200th Yelp review (omg, what even!?) to the community that hooked me in and has kept pushing myself to be the best version of me. Seabright CrossFit is one of the best boxes you're going to find out here in the greater Bay Area. Since it's located in the home of CrossFit, you can be assured that the quality of their coaches and workouts are top notch. I dropped in for a class after years of thinking about it (and having so many friends do CrossFit) and I haven't looked back. The classes offered are intentional, challenging, and addicting. Every class begins with a warm up, followed by a strength portion before diving into the workout of the day (WOD). The coaches walk through every single movement and offer scaling modifications to fit all levels and body types (seriously). They are a mix of HIIT, strength, and gymnastics, and all are designed to challenge your body in different ways. Thanks to this community, I've tried out new movements that I've never attempted (or at least hadn't in 2+ decades). I was active prior to CrossFit doing mostly cardio and some strength training at my gym, but nothing beats the rush of group fitness in a wonderful community. The Seabright CrossFitters are amazing and I've met some of the best people since living here in Santa Cruz. Sure, I can't do everything asked (still working on a proper pull-up, hanging upside down, and climbing a rope), but I try my best, and can tell you that I've never felt stronger and see myself being able to accomplish this if I stay focused and work (and REST!) hard. Prices may seem steep at first (with monthly memberships starting around $130) but you really can't put a price on your health, trust me. Try them out and see what you think, and maybe I'll see you in class one day! S/o to my 6am crew and coaches Katie, Pete, and Lorianne for being my champions through my CrossFit journey thus far!”

“The most kindest, most welcoming box I’ve dropped in (my 15th+ for me); excellent workout, great feedback from coach - which I always appreciate! Hands down would return next time I’m in town (update: forgot a shirt there and was emailed about getting it back - nice to know the honesty of reaching out to me to get it back!)”

“This has been a great community for my daughter. She loves the teachers and students. I especially love the buddy program they have with the bigger school. They also have a Spanish teacher that comes in weekly. The grounds are safe and in top rate condition. Definitely check it out.”

“Serious instruction on a specific Tai Chi Chuan form, as well as advanced classes on Push Hands. This is the best option in Santa Cruz for learning Tai Chi Chuan. The owner/instructor has recently added a sword class, as well as a less form-based class that focuses on movement and balance. I have taken only the Tai Chi classes. For the Tai Chi Chuan, you need to approach the series of classes with patience, because the learning process is slow. The glacial pace of the series can be frustrating (many new students drop out after a few classes). While I found the series to be helpful for my balance issues, and the instructor to be knowledgeable and respectful, I felt hampered in my learning by the format and makeup of the classes. The problem is that there is no class specifically for those new to the form. Perhaps multilevel group practice is normal in martial arts, but the classes here include students at all levels, including a few who are advanced in the form. That means that some of the class time is devoted to watching the advanced students execute the full form, and too much time (in my opinion) is dedicated to instructing on refinements to positions when some of the students barely have the basic sequence of movements committed to memory. The intention behind this method of teaching is that students will take the full cycle of classes multiple times, and many do (you can also drop into classes and pay per class, so if you are repeating a series you can skip the first few classes). I would prefer that classes be split between beginners and advanced students, so that more time could be devoted to the basics, and there would be more time for repetitions. The instructor also offers private instruction, which is a good supplement to the group classes, if you can afford it. This is a practice to be learned over years, not in a matter of weeks, and patience is part of the discipline. I just wish there was a class solely for newbies.”

“A pretty nice thrift store ! Found what I needed quickly. They have a 50% off sale every 2nd Saturday ! Good stuff. Reasonable prices on most stuff. Fairly good quality items. They also have a return policy for store credit if your item doesn't work or has a problem. Great ! A great resource for the Santa Cruz area. When I need something, I always check Gray Bears first !”

“1st gym experience so I do not have anything to compare to. BUT there are things that need to be addressed. Cleaning. The drains in the shower smell, the same moldy spots have been in the showers since I joined in January. The roof leaks in spots when it rains. People sit on equipment for 10 minutes and play on their phone then work out for 2 minutes. The name should come with 24 hour access. Why 4 stars? I knew the hours when I signed up. The staff has ALWAYS been friendly every single visit and they have made some repairs. When equipment goes down within 2 weeks or so it tends to get fixed. Please address the issues, showers should not smell like sewage and should not be getting moldy. I don’t expect you to police gym members who have a 10 minute rest for every minute long set but a little more than a sign would be nice. I wouldn’t want someone to go off on me for pulling my phone out for 2 seconds to switch a song. But there are a growing number of people that are always on their phone.”
